The book, from Good Housekeeping, is a compendium of tips, methods and advice for running a household. It covers a myriad of tasks involved in cleaning, maintaining and organizing a home, from ironing a shirt to fixing an electrical receptacle.
Sprinkled throughout are clever hints, safety cautions and tips on how to shop for items such as knives and wallpaper.
"The Complete Household Handbook" is published by Hearst Books and is priced at $24.95 in hardcover.
A DIY system to givevinyl siding a new look
The Flood Co. of Hudson, Ohio, has come out with a do-it-yourself system designed to give older vinyl siding a like-new look.
The two-step process involves cleaning the siding with Restora Vinyl Cleaner and applying Restora Clear Vinyl Revitalizer, which the company says will restore the original color of dull, faded siding.
The company estimates that treating 12 to 16 shutters with the Restora products would cost $45, and restoring the siding of a 2,200-square-foot home would cost $440.
The products were being introduced in April at select paint stores, hardware stores and home centers. Retailers may be located by calling (800) 321-3444.
Gardening journal
Wise gardeners keep a journal, and now is a great time to update it. Plant tags break and become unreadable, so at the very least keep a record of what new plants you're adding to the garden and where you put them.
Breathing room for wall
Don't feel compelled to hang art on every inch of wall space. Every room needs one blank wall to rest the eye. If a wall is less than 36 inches wide, consider placing the art elsewhere.
Washable paint
A new trend in paint: making even flat finishes more scrubbable and stain-resistant.
Last summer, Ace Hardware introduced Ace Sensations, billed as the first flat paint to contain Scotchgard to increase washability.
