BOXING 42 bouts slated for prep fighters



Boardman High has 16 athletes ready to compete.
YOUNGSTOWN -- Tuesday's action marks the midway point of this year's KO Drugs High School Boxing Tournament.
Forty-two fights are scheduled for quarterfinals night at St. Nicholas Byzantine Center at the Grove on Shady Run Road.
Leading the way will be Boardman, which has 16 fighters scheduled. Austintown Fitch, which had six fighters win last week, will send eight into the ring, while Canfield has six.
There are 13 fights in which undefeated boxers will square off, including upperclass (11th-12th graders) heavyweights Dan Bayus from Brookfield and Tim Ortega from Boardman.
Bayus was a winner in the opening week and Ortega won last Tuesday.
Upperclass middleweights Nick Marchese of Niles and Brandon Holmes from Champion, both 1-0, will square off. Holmes is a returning champion.
Bowden vs. Neopolitan
Two underclass heavyweights who looked very good in the first two weeks, Bill Bowden from South Range and James Neopolitan from Struthers, will fight Tuesday.
From Fitch, welterweight Bobby McFarland, super middleweight Fruto Nunez and light heavyweight Dominic Drummond, all underclass fighters, will joined by upperclass super middleweight Steve McLaughlin.
There will be 45-second three-round bouts with 18-ounce gloves and padded headgear provided.
Doors open at 6 p.m., with the first bout scheduled for 7. Tickets cost $10 for adults and $6 for students.
