Warren JFK team pulls off upset; top singles players eye districts



YOUNGSTOWN -- Warren JFK's unseeded doubles team of Anthony Antenucci and Jeff Jenkins pulled off the biggest upset of Thursday's Division II sectional tournament at Volney Rogers courts, defeating Liberty's fourth-seeded team of Greg Ezzo and Eric Saddle in three sets to earn a spot in next week's Division II district tennis tournament.
Antenucci and Jenkins won 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 6-2 to claim the final spot. They will meet Poland's second-seeded team of Don Somers and Chad Ruehs on Saturday at Boardman High School to determine seeding in the district tournament in Canton. Ursuline's Albert Cook and Josh Cook, the tournament's top seed, and Poland's Fred Romeo and Matt McElroy, the tournament's third seed, will also meet on Saturday.
Poland had one of its strongest tennis teams in history this season, edging Metro Athletic Conference power Canfield to win the league title with an undefeated record.
Singles
BOARDMAN -- The top four seeded singles players advanced to the sectional quarterfinals on Thursday at Boardman High School.
Ursuline's Kelton Person, Poland's Luke Duchek, Warren JFK's David Ceglia and Jefferson's Alex Czayka each won two matches to advance to this afternoon's quarterfinals at Boardman. Also advancing to the quarterfinals were Salem's Tom Spack, Edgewood's Ryan Rodriguez and Matt Liszewski and JFK's Andrew Barran.
Each player needs one victory to secure a berth in the district tournament. The winners will play semifinals and finals at 9 a.m. Saturday at Boardman to determine district seedings.
