YOUNGSTOWN -- Beaver Local High's Dan Kinsey said the reason his school entered the Steel Valley Conference was for the competition.
And Kinsey dominated the competition, winning three events and placing second in another at the SVC track and field meet Thursday at Chaney.
Kinsey won the 110-meter hurdles in 14.5 seconds, the 300 hurdles (39.5) and the discus with a throw of 165 feet, 10 inches. He finished second in the long jump.
"This is a great meet to compete in," said Kinsey, who will play football and run track at Indiana University.
Beaver Local coach Scott Jernigan said, "Kinsey is one of the best athletes I've ever coached and he's an inspirational leader for our young kids."
Close competition
Warren Harding won the boys title with 131 points. Ursuline was a close second with 130 1/2 in the field of eight teams.
The Raiders' Benja'Lan Provitt won both sprints, finishing in 10.6 in the 100 and 22.0 in the 200.
"My brother J'Abneb was the competition for me today," said Benja'Lan.
J'Abnet Provitt was second in both sprints (10.7 and 22.1, respectively) and both were members of the winning 4x200 relay and the second place 4x100 relay.
Benja'Lan Provitt, a senior who is leaning attending the University of Akron, said, "I got a good start in the 200 [and] ran the curve real good."
Girls
Latalia Jones, a junior at Chaney, dominated in the dashes, winning the 100 (12.0), 200 (25.1) and 400 (62.1).
"I was taught by my coach to take charge at the start of every race," said Jones. "[And] not to worry about anyone, that hard work at practice will show up in what I do at meets."
Cardinal Mooney captured the girls crown with 148 points and Warren JFK was second with 89.
Mooney senior Marta Bruner won both the discus (106-5) and the shot put (34-5).
"I am from Belarus," said Bruner, "and this is my first [year] competing in the throws."
Adopted, she has lived in the United States for three years.
"I'm a little bit weak in the shot and nervous at how I would do," said Bruner. "I knew I would have a chance in the discus.
"I like the throws, seriously try to do everything my coach has taught me, practice by myself Saturdays and Sundays and that hard work has paid off," she said.
Confidence
Angelene Cicero of Warren JFK won both the 100 and 300 hurdles.
"You have to have confidence in yourself while on the track," said Cicero. "It's a physical [and] mental thing and hard work and preparation are those aspects that help get it done."
Ursuline's distance runner Tiffani Miller, a junior, defended her 1600 (5:39.8) and 800 (2:25.2) titles and she also won the 3200 (12:38).
"I wanted to come here and do this," said Miller. "I got out in front in all three runs and wanted to see if anyone could catch me and I still saved a little bit for the stretch if needed."
Of the three runs, she said she loves the 800 the best because she feels a little stronger in it.
