Springfield ousts Crestview, 5-4

Jordan Reynolds scored all four of the Rebels' runs.
EAST FAIRFIELD -- Springfield High used a four-run rally in the third inning and held off a late Crestview rally, turning back the Rebels, 5-4, in a Division III sectional final baseball game Thursday.
In the district semifinals, the Tigers will play Campbell Memorial at Cene Park in Struthers on May 19 at 4:30 p.m.
"This was a well played game," Tigers coach Bob Beam said. "Our guys really gutted it out when they had to."
Crestview scored a run in the top of the first inning as Jordan Reynolds walked, stole second and third and scored on a wild pitch.
In the third, Reynolds reached on an error and scored on another wild pitch. He reached base four times and scored three runs.
"Jordan really made some things happen," Rebels coach Rick Gates said. "But we came up just a little short."
Sarich homers
Springfield made things happen too, in the third inning. The Tigers managed only two hits in the inning, but one was a two-run homer by designated hitter Andrew Sarich off the Rebels' Craig Schmidt.
Schmidt settled down after that, allowing only four hits the remainder of the game, and his effort elicited praise from both coaches.
"I really feel bad for Craig," Gates said.
"He's pitched well enough to win on several occasions only to come up short."
Greg Brown's fielder's choice scored Andy Walton to make to it 5-3 in the fifth and in the seventh Crestview pulled to 5-4.
The Rebels had runners on first and third with one out, but the Tigers' Luke Summers (8-2) struck out the next batter and got the final out on a comebacker to the mound.
Summers pitched around trouble all night, twice getting out of jams with two runners on base and no outs.
"We just wanted to try and move the runners along," Gates said of those two potential rallies. "When we were down 5-2 our kids were really quiet. Then in that last inning we got fired up a little bit."
"My goal coming in," said Summers, "was to throw strikes, not walk anyone and not give up any big hits."
Summers, who will start against Campbell, walked only two and all of Crestview's hits were singles.
