REAL ID

REAL ID
How it works
The Real ID Act establishes minimum standards for states to follow in issuing new driver's licenses. States aren't required to abide by the law. But if they don't, licenses they issue cannot be used for "federal identification or any other official purpose" including getting on a plane, obtaining access to federal buildings and parks or taking aviation courses for a federal flying license. To get or renew a driver's license, people will have to show:
An identification document showing full legal name and date of birth.
Evidence of legal presence in the United States.
Proof of a valid Social Security number.
Proof of legal residence in the state.
The Real ID Act also establishes a new temporary driver's license program for aliens visiting the United States, those with valid non-immigrant visas, refugees and those seeking asylum. The license will be valid only for the period an alien is authorized to stay in the United States.
