Church break-in probed
WARREN -- City police are investigating the Thursday morning break-in at St. Mary Church, 232 Seneca Ave. N.E. Officers responded to an alarm there about 4 a.m. and found that someone had broken out a west side window of the church office. Remaining items were gathered as evidence, but it was not yet known what is missing.
Memorial for AIDS victims
WARREN -- Trumbull County Area AIDS Task Force is planning a candlelight memorial Sunday, starting at 7:30 p.m. with a reception in the log cabin across from Courthouse Square. It is the 22nd anniversary of the nationwide community-based AIDS event and the 18th year for the Trumbull County Area event. The vigil begins at 8:30 p.m. at the outdoor ampitheater next to city hall and Perkins Park. Parking is available at First Presbyterian Church of Warren on Mahoning Avenue.
Trumbull Lifelines event
WARREN -- Trumbull Lifelines' annual meeting and award presentations will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Enzo's Restaurant, 2918 Elm Road. Ohio Parents for Drug Free Youth will present its award to the Trumbull County Alcohol and Drug Free Coalition for the best "red ribbon campaign" in Ohio, organizers said. Lifelines is the alcohol, drug addiction and mental health services board for Trumbull County.
Attorney, judge memorial
YOUNGSTOWN -- The memorial committee of the Mahoning County Bar Association will honor attorneys and judges who have died in the last year at 11 a.m. May 26 at the Mahoning County Courthouse, Domestic Relations Court. Attorneys and judges being remembered are Robert R. Machuga, Avetis Darvanan, Leda C. Hartwell, Floyd Haynes, Robert H. Boyd, Richard C. Ross, Robert J. Kalafut, Paul E. Stevens and R. John Mock. The memorial address will be given by common pleas Judge R. Scott Krichbaum.
Attempted abduction
YOUNGSTOWN -- Two men who crashed their car into an Independent Taxi in front of the police station on West Boardman Street around 2:15 a.m. Wednesday tried to open the rear doors of the cab to pull out the female passenger, police said. The cab driver sprayed the assailants with pepper spray and they got back in their car and drove off, reports show. The cab driver said he picked up the woman on McGuffey Road and noticed a car following his taxi, trying to ram it. He then drove to the police station.
Men shot on E. Avondale
YOUNGSTOWN -- Two men were shot in the 500 block of East Avondale Avenue around 2:20 p.m. Wednesday. The injuries were not life threatening, reports show. The victims told police that a juvenile got out of a car and fired five shots. Another passenger had a shotgun but didn't fire it, police said. As of Thursday, no arrests had been made.
BOE garage break-in
YOUNGSTOWN -- Someone broke into the Youngstown Board of Education garage on Albert Street and stole a 1990 school bus, police said. The loss was discovered Wednesday, but there were no signs of forced entry, police said. The bus was later found; it had four tires missing.
Saturation patrols set
The OVI Task Force will be conducting saturation patrols for impaired drivers today and Saturday in Youngstown, Canfield, New Middletown and Springfield Township. Police agencies from Mahoning County will have additional officers on patrol, enforcing a zero-tolerance policy for OVI (operating a vehicle impaired) and those not wearing safety belts. Funding for the extra patrols is available from a grant from federal and state sources through the Mahoning County District Board of Health and Mahoning County commissioners.
School nurse grants
NEW MIDDLETOWN -- Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield has awarded grants totaling $5,000 to eight Ohio schools, including Springfield Elementary School, as part of its School Nurse Grant Program. The grants support school nurses' efforts to promote healthful lifestyles in children attending grades K-12. This is the second year for Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield's program. Six Ohio schools, including Canfield High School, got funded last year.
