Mooney, LaBrae win and advance



Fitch and Hubbard won to remain in their league races.
STRUTHERS -- Dan Babyak, Kyle McCarthy and Shane Gallagher each doubled as the Mooney High baseball team defeated Lisbon, 8-2, Thursday in a Division III sectional final at Cene Park.
"We played very well today," Mooney (18-3) coach Steve Leslie said. "Joe Irwin pitched a great game and the four-run inning in the fifth broke it open for us."
Irwin pitched six innings and Pat Kelley the seventh for a three-hitter.
McCarthy had two of Mooney's seven hits and Babyak scored twice.
For Lisbon (12-10), Aaron Cosma pitched.
Mooney will play LaBrae in a district semifinal at Cene Park on May 19.
LaBrae 3, Grand Valley 2
ORWELL -- Cory Hinzman honored and Mike Witherow's two hits included one in the eighth inning that scored Kyle Rowan with the winning run.
Eric Hart had three hits for the Vikings.
Regular season
LIBERTY -- Rob Sullivan hit two doubles as Hubbard remains in the Trumbull Athletic Conference race with a 9-7 win over Liberty.
Monday, Hubbard (13-4, 9-3) will play Champion, which also has three league losses, for the TAC crown.
Sullivan scored twice and drove in a run. A.J. Pulice, Joe Marando, Mike O'Neill and Andrew Chick also had two hits for the Eagles. Chick had two RBIs.
For Liberty (6-17, 4-9), Dennis Jordan had two hits while Kyle Hoff and Shawn Lininger each had two RBIs.
Fitch 4, Canton GlenOak 2
AUSTINTOWN -- Scoring all its runs in the first two innings, Fitch won the Federal League game.
John Mang scattered four hits with four strikeouts as he helped the Falcons (16-5, 9-2) move into first place in the league standings.
Brian Mellott hit a pair of singles and scored a run for Fitch and teammate Dave Diyorio hit a pair of singles and drove in a run.
GlenOak slipped to 13-9 and 7-3.
Boardman 5, Massillon Jackson 4
BOARDMAN -- Joe Bako's base hit brought home Nate Tacsik with the game-winning run to cap the Spartans' three-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Tacsik doubled and drove in two runs for the Spartans (13-11, 4-6 Federal League). Bako had three hits and Cameron Cimino two.
The Polar Bears are 13-7, 4-7.
Poland 8, Howland 4
POLAND -- Tom Clayton hit two doubles for the Bulldogs (14-9, 8-3 Metro Athletic Conference).
Marc Turnbull had three hits and three RBIs while Dom Marchionda, Jim Pasquine, Jim Petrolla and Frank LaRubbio had two hits apiece.
West Branch 5, Northwest 3
CANAL FULTON -- Matt Catania homered and Josh Winans doubled for the Warriors (14-8, 8-6 Northeastern Buckeye Conference).
Winning pitcher Chad Kitzmiller (4-0) scattered four hits over six innings.
Southeast 9, Field 5
RAVENNA -- Greg Lemley homered and doubled for the Pirates. Joe Knopick, Brad Finch and David Hay also homered.
