SOFTBALL Poland tops Tigers to clinch share of 19th-straight title



Canfield can tie the Bulldogs with a win over Howland next week.
POLAND -- Freshman Allie Patton (8-0) allowed one hit and struck out five batters over five innings Wednesday in leading the Poland High softball team to a 12-2 victory over Howland.
The win assures the Bulldogs (22-2, 11-1) of a share of the Metro Athletic Conference crown. It's the 19th-straight year that Poland, coached by Reid Lamport, has won a league crown.
Canfield can tie Poland for the MAC crown if the Cardinals defeat Howland next Tuesday.
Kari Thompson hit two doubles and a single, and pinch runners scored three times for her off those hits.
Jenna Susany hit a double and single, drove in two runs, scored twice and stole a base. Ciera Urichich hit two singles and drove in three runs.
Howland fell for the 12th time in 20 outings and is 5-4 in the MAC.
Champion 7, Hubbard 1
CHAMPION -- The Golden Flashes scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to put the Trumbull Athletic Conference game out of reach.
Jaclyn Carpenter (8-0) pitched a two-hitter with nine strikeouts for Champion (24-1, 14-0). Kasey Karr hit a double and single while Paige Prater and Jessica Bova each had two singles.
Hubbard slipped to 10-11 and 6-7.
Lakeview 7, Brookfield 1
CORTLAND -- Winning pitcher Lindsay Whetzel (9-1) hit two doubles for the Bulldogs (15-5, 9-5 TAC).
Lauren Whetzel, Brittney Bucco and Kelly Moore all had two RBIs.
For Brookfield (3-16, 3-9), Kara Egelesky, Stephanie Geer and Mary Palumbo had hits.
South Range 5, McDonald 0
McDONALD -- Heather Stacy tripled and doubled twice as the Raiders (6-13, 4-6 Inter-County League) won the rain-suspended game. Lynn O'Connell also had two hits including a double.
For McDonald (8-11, 3-9), Courtney Vitullo doubled.
Northwest 3, West Branch 1
CANAL FULTON -- Bri Benedict tripled for the Warriors (8-14, 3-11 Northeast Buckeye Conference).
Heidi Gipson had two hits for Northwest (11-11, 8-6).

NORTH JACKSON -- Ali Roach scattered seven hits and struck out 12 batters as Windham eliminated Jackson-Milton 5-1 in a Division IV sectional championship game.
The Bluejays held a 1-0 lead after three innings, but the Blue Bombers tied it up in the fourth, then scored four more times in the fifth to prevail.
Lindsey Johns hit a pair of singles for the Bluejays (8-12).
Jodi Stanley hit a two-run triple for the Blue Bombers in the fifth inning.
Western Reserve 21, Southern 0
SALINEVILLE -- Quinn McCammon has a perfect 5-for-5 day at the plate and drove in four runs as Western Reserve (16-6) rolled to a sectional championship.
Macy Malla had three hits and three RBIs while Andrea Martin added two hits including a triple.
Katie Harmon and Stevie Banks combined to pitch a one-hit shutout. Southern's Sara Brown had the only hit, a double.
Western Reserve will meet Mineral Ridge next Wednesday in district play at Lakeview High in Cortland.
East Canton 2, Lowellville 1
EAST CANTON -- Carla Blinsky (7-10) took the tournament loss for the Rockets (12-10).
