YOUNGSTOWN -- Applications are being accepted for this summer's National Youth Sports Program at Youngstown State University.
Applications will be taken at the Mahoning Youngstown Community Action Partnership, 101 E. Federal Plaza from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Fridays beginning this week through June 10.
NYSP is a six-week sports program at YSU for children ages 10 to 16. In addition to sports instruction, the program provides drug and alcohol prevention, math and science skills and life skills such as nutrition, personal health and job responsibilities.
The program runs 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays June 20 through July 27.

Golf outing
YOUNGSTOWN -- The 20th-annual YSU Alumni Society Golf Outing will be held May 23 at Youngstown Country Club.
Registration begins at 11 a.m., with a buffet luncheon at 11:30 a.m. and a 1 p.m. shotgun start. Prizes will be awarded.
The cost is $125 per golfer or $500 per foursome. Reservations may be made by contacting the YSU Alumni Office at (330) 941-1591 or habelgin@ysu.edu.

Springfield Old-timers
NEW MIDDLETOWN -- The Springfield Old-timer's baseball team defeated Massillon 9-8 in Saturday's season opener for both teams.
Glen Penwell had two hits for Springfield and got the pitching victory with relief help from John Morgan.
Malone golf
CANTON -- Malone College's men's golf team won the NAIA Region IX team championship at the Apple Valley Golf Course in Howard, Ohio, and qualified for the NAIA National Championships.
Malone set a team scoring record for the event with 872.
Malone's Scotty Jones (East Palestine) earned NAIA Region IX and American Mideast Conference Medalist honors by posting a 214 (74-71-69). Jones was also named the MVP for the conference.
Penn-Ohio golf
YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngstown Ohio Carpet extended its lead in the Penn-Ohio Golf League recently at Mill Creek Golf Course.
Ohio Carpet, led by Glen Milton's even-par 70, scored 21 points to win the week's action and now leads the standings with 57 points. Warren is second with 45 1/2 and Sharon third with 39 1/2.
Josh Zarlinga also posted a 71, while Zak Manski had a 73 for Youngstown. Medalist honors went to Warren's Jim Parry with a 2-under-par 68, while teammate George Allen shot a 71. The next match will be May 21 at Hickory VFW Golf Course in Hermitage, Pa.

Hallock picks Hiram
HIRAM -- Michael Hallock, a senior at Poland High, will continue his soccer career at Hiram College.
A captain of the Division II eighth-ranked Bulldogs, Hallock was named all-Metro Athletic Conference and all-district. The Bulldogs posted a 13-0-2 record and won the MAC title.
Bowling
YOUNGSTOWN -- Independent No. 2 of Cleveland rolled the top series 3,537 as the 63 Slovak National Bowling tournament completed its fourth and final week at A Plus Lanes.
Al's Boys of Warren placed second with 3,513 and were followed by Sunset Lanes of Farrell, 3,466; NZO Boyz of Hermitage, 3,444 and All Pro Sports of Ford City, 3,442.
Ed Blankenship and Bill Perko of Eastlake bowled the top doubles set, 1,568. Mike Kehman and Del Lehman of Warren were second with 1,550. Bernie Miloser and Mel Bowen of Ford City finished with 1,537, Pete Underation and Joe Baker of Norton, 1,510 and Brandon Mangino and Gary Mangino of New Castle, 1,499.
Chris Negrea of Farrell had the best series 820. Al Duda was second with 811, Jim Zielinski of Cleveland third with 793, Ron Fraley of Wheatland fourth with 784 and tied for fifth were Tim Lindus of Masury and Ken Heard of Boardman with 744.
Ron Fraley of Wheatland was the all events winner with 2,303. Negrea of Farrell rolled 2,256, Lester Lampman Jr. of Warren 2,211, Craig Molnar of Cleveland 2,208 and Pete Underation of Barberton 2,197.
