Voting sites change for some Lawrence voters

Most of the changes in voting locations are in five townships.
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Within the next day or so, some 90 Lawrence County residents will receive notices from the county voter registration office that their voting sites have changed.
County elections workers updated addresses to reflect changes made as part of the 911 numbering project throughout the county. As a result, some residents were reassigned to other precincts for voting purposes.
Therefore, on Tuesday, they could arrive at polls where they have voted for years, only to find they are not on the list of registered voters there.
"But if that happens, the poll worker there can call our office to determine where the voter should vote," Marlene Gabriel, county elections director, said during an elections board meeting Tuesday.
She said most of the changes affect residents of Slippery Rock, Union, North Beaver, Scott and Pulaski townships.

In other news, there will be a public testing of the voting and counting process at 10 a.m. Friday at the Lawrence County Government Center. Also, Gabriel said, all absentee ballots must be returned to the government center by 5 p.m. Friday.
If a voted ballot is mailed, it must be postmarked by May 12. The last day to apply for an absentee ballot was Tuesday.
Gabriel said she expects voter turnout to be low, possibly about 40 percent of registered voters, for the primary on Tuesday.
She said she is expecting several write-in candidates to be added to ballots and stressed that in order for votes for a write-in candidate to be counted, voters must write the name of the candidate on the write-in line and blacken the appropriate oval.
