CHAMPION -- They will remember Cachet Murray of Girard High School for years to come whenever a Trumbull Athletic Conference track and field meet is held.
And well they should. Certainly one of the all-time great female athletes in the history of Girard high, Murray, a senior, won three events and was named MVP of the girls division of the TAC meet held Tuesday at Champion High school.
It was the fourth straight year that she won the sprints at the TAC.
"This was a tune-up for state and I want to go back there and break the records I set last year," she said.
She not only won the 100 at the TAC, but also won the 200 and long jump.
Murray ran the 100 meters in 12.2 seconds. Ask if she got off to a good start in the dash, she said, "Yes I did. I must have because my coach didn't shout at me. It was a great race and I felt good."
She ran the 200 in 25.6 and jumped 17 feet, 3 1/2 inches in the long jump.
Schannell wins twice
Katie Schannell took the 800 (2:36.5) and the 1600 (5:46.3) as Lakeview repeated as girls champion with 170 1/2 points and Girard was second with 106 1/2.
The Bulldogs also won the 4x100 (51.8), 4x200 (1:48.3) and 4x800 (10:26.9) relays.
Rachel Crafton, who went to the state meet in the 300 hurdles last year, took first place with a season-best time of 15.7 in the 100 highs, then won the 300 (46.5).
"I could have been a little faster in the highs, but in the 300, I had to push myself and try and run my best time, because there wasn't much competition," she said.
Boys
Lakeview boys won the crown for the second year in a row as it scored 143 points. Liberty placed second with 125.
John Emery of Champion won the boys long jump with a leap of 21 feet, 3 1/4 inches. He was third in both the 100 and 200 and a member of Champion's 4x200 relay that placed third.
"That was my best jump ever, said Emery. "I would like to beat our school (21-9) record and would love to do 22 or the mid 22s and make it to state."
Junior Brien Golden of Liberty cleared 6 feet, 2 inches to win the high jump.
"That was my best jump ever," said Golden. "I thought I had a chance coming in, but that height was a big obstacle for me to stick it out and go after, but that's what my parents have always told me to do."
John Humphrey of Liberty was named MVP of the meet. He took the discus with a throw of 167 feet, placed third in the shot (44-2 1/2) and won the 100 meters (10.9).
Other double winners
Marcellus Bowman of Liberty took the 200 (22.4) and the 400 (49.7). The Leopards' Aaron Pollack was first in the 800 (2:02.8) and the 1600 (4:42).
Payson Cowie of Newton Falls took first place in the 110 hurdles (15.9) and the 300 hurdles (42.1).
Lakeview, which won the 4x200 relay (1:34.1) had several second and third places during the meet to accumulate the necessary points for the team crown.
