Boardman namesCardillo as coach
BOARDMAN -- The Boardman school board named Jared Cardillo boys basketball coach Monday.
He replaces Dan Gorski, whose contract wasn't renewed.
Cardillo will retain his position of assistant high school principal.
Cardillo, a 1989 Boardman High graduate, played one year at Northeastern (Mass.) University before transferring to Youngstown State. He was the junior varsity coach at Boardman from 1997-2001 and has also coached the freshmen and seventh grade teams. His first teaching job was at Champion and he spent seven years teaching at Boardman before moving into administration.
"This is sort of a lifelong dream that I wasn't really sure I'd be able to fulfill," said Cardillo, who will keep most of Gorski's staff. "I think have a great young staff and I'm excited to get started."
Cardillo and his wife, Gina, have a 7-year-old daughter (Franchesca) and a 5-year-old son (Luciano).
"My family is really important to me and this is a decision we made together," he said. "I'm humbled by it. It's a great opportunity.
"One of the best things about coaching is you get a chance to build relationships with kids and that's something I really missed. We have a lot of really good kids here and I'm looking forward to working with them."
Fitch closeto naming coach
AUSTINTOWN -- Fitch High is closer to hiring its new boys basketball coach.
The five-member selection committee will recommend a candidate at next Tuesday's board of education meeting. The committee will not release the candidate's name until then, but assistant athletic director Joe Nohra said he is an internal candidate.
"Our board is dealing with a lot of difficult issues right now and it's not fair to them for us to release his name until then," said Nohra.
The committee, which included Nohra, athletic director Dick Kenney, and high school principal Doug McGlynn, interviewed two internal candidates and did not analyze outside applications, Nohra said.
"We're near the end of the process," he said. "We wanted to at least put him on an interim basis and start moving forward with everything starting summer leagues and camps."
Former coach Gary Conroy stepped down last month.
