SPRINGFIELD SCHOOLS New Middletown will keep providing a cop

Council opened bids for resurfacing six streets.
NEW MIDDLETOWN -- The village will continue to provide a police officer in the schools.
On Monday, village council accepted Springfield Local Schools' offer to pay $200 per school day for the remainder of this year to the village to cover wages and benefits for the full-time services of New Middletown Police officer Kenneth Goist, who has worked at the schools since 2001. The schools will also pay the village for Goist's services throughout the 2005-06 school year at $205 per day.
Police Chief Bill Morvay said Goist provides many services to the schools and is "really there for the kids."
He serves as truant officer, guards the crossing at the elementary school, acts a counselor for parents and students on law enforcement issues, deals with all juvenile issues, makes recommendations on school security, does seat-belt education, speaks to government and history classes on arrest laws and search and seizure, handled a recent bomb threat at the school and recently accompanied pupils on a field trip to Washington.
Goist divides his time among the district's three schools.

Also Monday, bids were opened for resurfacing of six roads, including Foster Drive, East and West Circleview Drive and Circleview Court, Stacy Drive and Brungard Road. It also includes installation of a storm sewer and rebuilding of a cul-de-sac on Stacy. The project will be funded through the Issue 2 Ohio Public Works Commission Loan Project.

An addition of a "Wedge Box" to the skate park was approved for $2,330. There is still $1,564 left in donations raised for the park, and council will pick up the $766 balance.
Morvay reported the Memorial Day parade will take place May 30, beginning with lineup at 9 a.m. at the high school. The parade will start at 9:30 and end at the war memorial at the elementary school. A short service will follow. Anyone wishing to be in the parade should call Morvay at (330) 542-2846.
Council also authorized an agreement with Springfield Township to allow annexation of several parcels on Calla Road to the township. In return, the township will cede some parcels to the village. The purpose is to allow developer Rudy Ohlin to have his entire development in one jurisdiction.
