PREP BASEBALL Canfield claims MAC title
Jake Abbott had 14 strikeouts for Maplewood in a Division IV tourney game.
CANFIELD -- For the second straight year, Canfield reigns as the Metro Athletic Conference baseball champion.
Matt Guerrieri, who singled with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning, scored on a ground-rule double BY Sean Baker.
Up till that time, it was a pitchers duel between the Cardinals' Joe Rosko (7-0), who scattered five hits and struck out seven, and Alliance's Ryan Hendershot (4-1) who allowed five hits and struck out three.
Guerrieri also singled for the Cardinals (18-6, 10-0).
Sean White hit three singles for the Aviators (16-8, 6-5).
Poland 17, Ursuline 3
STRUTHERS -- The Bulldogs sent 11 batters to the plate in the second inning to score seven runs and put the non-league game out of reach.
Winning pitcher Paul Hay (3-0) scattered seven hits to pick up the win. Jim Petrolla, Jim Kozlow, Lou Coppolla each hit a double and Ryan Satterlee a triple to spark the Bulldogs' (12-9) 17-hit attack.
Ursuline (15-6) was led by Justin Markota, who hit a double and single and drove in a run.
Struthers 7, Salem 2
SALEM -- Freshman Mike Vittucci scattered nine hits to pick up his first victory of the season for the Wildcats (8-15, 3-8 MAC).
Jim Farris hit a double, two singles, drove in a run and scored once for Struthers, while teammate Adam Wilaj hit a pair of singles, stole a base and drove in a run.
Cody Dillon, Craig Hritz and Ryan McCallister each had two hits for the Quakers (13-9, 3-8).
Niles 5, Howland 2
HOWLAND -- The Red Dragons scored three runs in the third inning to improve to 12-10, 5-6 MAC.
Brandon paced Niles with three hits while Sean Cleary added two.
Adam Solich and Mandli Pahoulis each had two hits for the Tigers.
Boardman 11, Chaney 1
BOARDMAN -- Nate Tascik homered, Chris Tremblay tripled and Armani Johnson doubled for the Spartans (11-11). Tascik, Tremblay and Joe Iabucci each had two hits.
Richie O'Brien (3-2) and Mike Baharis combined to scatter four hits.
For Chaney (3-17), Tom Enyeart had three hits
Hubbard 11, Brookfield 4
HUBBARD -- Keith Pero had three hits and scored three runs to help the Eagles (12-4, 8-3) remain in the Trumbull Athletic Conference race.
Rob Sullivan, A.J. Pulice and Andrew Chick had two hits apiece while Josh Stipanovich doubled. Winning pitcher Matt Backes scattered seven hits.
Hubbard trails Champion by half a game and will play the Golden Flashes next Monday.
For Brookfield (10-11), Brian Daugherty had three hits while Justin Wellendorf and Ryan Coller had two.
South Range 8, Springfield 6
NORTH LIMA -- The Raiders (11-8, 8-1 Inter-County League) made the most of its six hits to prevail.
Steve Bensinger scattered seven hits to pick up the victory. Aaron Wood hit a double to pace the Tigers (17-8, 8-4).
Crestview 8, Sebring 5
SEBRING -- Matt Petrosky had two triples and three RBIs and David Myers added three hits and three RBIs for Crestview (12-10, 7-5) in a Tri-County League game.
East Palestine 4-16, Wellsville 3-7
EAST PALESTINE -- Dan Hanholt was the winning pitcher in both games.
Dave Baker, Trent Mohney and Zach Dunn homered for the Bulldogs (6-16).
Field 10, Southeast 3
RAVENNA -- Field scored five runs in the third inning to break a 1-1 tie, then iced the contest as it scored four runs in the fifth.
Joe Knopick hit three doubles to pace the Pirates. Tom Hradek hit a pair of doubles for the winners.

CORTLAND -- Jake Abbott (8-0) fired a one-hitter and struck out 14 batters as the Maplewood (13-4) defeated Southington 12-0 in a Division IV sectional title game.
Dan Morrison hit a triple, single, drove in two runs and stole a base for the Rockets. Doug Wajda hit a three-run double in the fourth inning and tripled home another run in the fifth.
Anthony Rura of Southington (6-8), with one out in the third inning, singled to spoil Abbott's bid for a no-hitter.
