Group traveling to oppose Taft's voucher plan

YOUNGSTOWN -- Buses will roll from the Youngstown City School District to Columbus on Wednesday to show local opposition to Gov. Bob Taft's proposal to expand school vouchers in his biennial budget.
The budget has passed the House, but must pass the Senate before it becomes law.
"Although we may be swimming against the tide, we feel it is imperative to express out concerns about expanding vouchers," said schools Superintendent Dr. Wendy Webb.
"Fortunately, we have parents who understand that creating a dual system that takes from one and gives to another doesn't help either. We need to reframe funding so that we can serve all children with the best possible resources that will prepare them for a bright and productive future," she said.
Buses will depart at 10 a.m. Wednesday from Choffin Career and Technical Center. Parents and community supporters interested in attending should contact Tom Anderson, legislative liaison for the Urban Congress or M. Mike McNair, city schools' supervisor of community relations at (330) 744-6930.
