PREPS South Range splits with Columbiana



Poland softball team posted its 20th victory beating Akron Hoban 5-4.
NORTH LIMA -- South Range High split a baseball doubleheader with Columbiana Saturday. The Raiders won the first game 8-6, then lost to the Clippers 18-7.
In the first game, the Raiders were paced by Joe Marino who hit a home run and drove in three runs and Tom DeChellis had three hits including a double and scored twice. Ben Detwiler added two hits and scored three times.
Bill Sattler led the Clippers with a double and single.
Columbiana erupted for 13 runs in the first inning of the second contest and South Range couldn't make up the big difference.
Mike Welce collected four hits and scored three times for the Clippers.
Joe Marino and Tom DeChellis each had three hits for the Raiders.
Softball
AKRON -- Stow put the game out of reach when it scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning to defeat Canfield 4-1 at Firestone High School.
Lauren McGivern hit and double and scored and Stephanie Zunic hit a pair of singles to pace the Cardinals.
Winning pitcher Jenny Scherer hit a double and single and Taylor Weedle hit a pair of singles for Stow.
In a 6-1 win over Tallmadge, McGivern hit a pair of singles and scored on Jena Ervin's single pace the Cardinals.
Poland
COVENTRY -- Allie Patton improved to 7-0 with a nine-inning complete game effort, as the Bulldogs defeated Akron Hoban 5-4.
Patton struck out six and allowed five hits. Catcher Kari Thompson had two hits for Poland, including a double. Jenna Susany hit a run-scoring double in the ninth inning, as the Bulldogs broke a 3-3 tie, and Emma Brenoel also doubled.
In a 5-4 loss to Massillon Perry, Patton, Ashley Conger, Thompson and Brenoel all had two hits for Poland (20-2). Conger and Thompson had doubles.
Track
The Mineral Ridge girls track and field team won four events and placed in seven others to win the Cuyahoga Relays.
The Rams scored 79 points, edging Western Reserve Academy (76) and Gates Mills Hawken (59) for the team title.
Megan White, Samantha Reed and Alicia Milliron threw a combined 88 feet, 1/4 inch to win the shot put, and White, Reed and Andrea Bacak threw 281-11 to win the discus.
Emily Rhinehart, Abbey Kiger and Amanda Rummell combined to win the long jump (44-10 1/4), and Kiger, Amanda Rummen, Bethany Bissell and Morgan Makrana finished in 1 minute, 8.2 seconds in the shuttle hurdles, setting a meet record.
The Rams finished second in the 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400, third in the high jump and sprint medley, fifth in the 4x1600 and sixth in the 4x800.
