State, local police arrest 62 gamblers

NEWTON FALLS -- State and local law enforcement officials arrested 62 people who were taking part in a poker game at St. Mary's Social Hall, 120 Maple Drive.
Officials from the Ohio Investigative Unit, Warren City and Newton Falls served a search warrant at the hall Saturday afternoon, said Bob Carlson, Newton Falls police chief.
The search followed a four-month undercover operation, he said.
"This was not a church-sponsored event, the hall was rented out," Carlson said.
The names of the people arrested and those who rented the hall were not available Saturday evening.
Sixty of the people arrested are facing a minor misdemeanor charge of public gaming.
The two people police believe were running the event will face a charge of operating a gambling house. All are scheduled to appear in municipal court Monday, the chief said.
