Hastert's wise concession

Chicago Tribune: House Speaker Dennis Hastert displayed the kind of pragmatism on Wednesday that has served him well in politics. This time, it will serve his party and his nation well, too.
At Hastert's behest, the House voted to restore the rules that govern the work of its ethics committee. Republicans had changed the rules to make it easier for either political party to block an investigation of one of its members. The Democrats had refused to operate under that change, the committee was at a standstill, and that was making the Republicans look very bad.
Travel records
House Majority Leader Tom DeLay supported the decision to restore the committee rules and said recently he was gathering 10 years worth of travel records for the committee to peruse. He should go one big step further and step down as majority leader while the investigation runs its course. If he's cleared, bring him back.
The committee shouldn't stop with DeLay. Democrats deserve credit for holding out until the ethics committee rules were restored. Now we'll see if Democrats also support vigorous investigations on both sides of the aisle.
