DIVISION III SECTIONAL McQueen's 1-hitter advances Campbell
Red Devils' ace strikesout career-high 15 batters in 12-4 win over Badger
CAMPBELL -- Lonnie McQueen pitched a one-hitter with a career-high 15 strikeouts as the Campbell Memorial High baseball team turned back Badger 12-4 Thursday in a Division III sectional baseball tournament game at Roosevelt Park.
Kevin Brown of Badger singled with two outs in the fifth inning to spoil McQueen's bid for a no-hitter.
McQueen aided his own cause with a triple and double. He also drove in a run and scored twice for the Red Devils (10-7).
Rich Tisone of Campbell hit a two-run single in the second inning and Lou Sammonas hit a two-run single in the third.
Next Thursday, Campbell will battle Ursuline at Cene Park in Struthers for a sectional title.
Springfield 16,East Palestine 1
NEW MIDDLETOWN -- Joey D'Amato, Aaron Wood and John Houser each had two hits for the Tigers (15-7). Wood and Mike Sobnosky homered while D'Amato tripled and Andrew Sarich doubled.
Winning pitcher Luke Sumners (7-2) struck out seven batters and walked none, retiring the first nine batters he faced.
Springfield will play at Crestview next Thursday in a sectional final.
LaBrae 5, Brookfield 4
LEAVITTSBURG -- Mark Yartz, Kyle Rowan and Cory Hindman had two hits each as the Vikings (7-8) won in eight innings.
Yartz produced the game-winning RBI and Eric Hart and Kyle Moore singled.
For Brookfield, Brian Daugherty had two RBIs.
Grand Valley 8, Newton Falls 4
ORWELL -- Winning pitcher Nick Henderlight (1-0) homered as the Mustangs earned a home game against LaBrae in the sectional final.
For the Tigers, Troy Balint homered and Justin Townsend had two hits and scored twice.
Warren JFK 5, Pymatuning Valley 3
ANDOVER -- Marc Rossi had two hits, one a double, and drove in two runs to pace Warren JFK against Pymatuning Valley.
Rich Baut also doubled, while Josh Cooper picked up the mound win.
JFK (6-11) will take on state-ranked Champion next Thursday in Champion.
