WARREN -- Liberty artist Tazim Jaffer will present "Defining Spaces; Sun, Sand, Sky," Saturday through June 11 at Trumbull Art Gallery, 96-198 E. Market St. The exhibit features photos and paintings inspired by images from Africa and the Far East. The "festive opening," from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, will include a "fusion of cultures and cuisine." Gallery Hours are noon to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and by appointment; call (330) 395-4876.
Playhouse to host musical
YOUNGSTOWN -- "Smokey Joe's Cafe," the musical featuring golden era hits "Hound Dog," "Stand By Me," "Jailhouse Rock," "Love Potion No. 9," "On Broadway" and others will run May 13 to 15, 20 to 22 and 27 to 29 at the Youngstown Playhouse. Pre-show meals will be served for the May 13 to 15 performances. Show times are 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2:30 p.m. Sundays. Dinner menu for Friday and Saturday is filet mignon, stuff shells, twice-baked potato casserole, green beans and salad, bread and butter, strawberry shortcake and beverages; cost is $15. Brunch menu for Sunday is ham and eggs, French toast and hash browns, fresh fruit, assorted Danish, cinnamon raisin cookies, assorted juices, coffee and tea; cost is $7. Arts exhibit opens
ASHTABULA -- The annual exhibit of works by members of Lake Shore Artists opens today at the Ashtabula Arts Center, 2928 W. 13th St., and runs through May 30. Several types of artwork are on display, including oil, watercolor, acrylics and pastels. Many of the works are for sale.
An opening reception is set for 7 to 9 p.m. May 13, where the public will have an opportunity to meet and talk to many of the artists. Light refreshments will be served. Admission is free.
The Arts Center gallery is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. There is no admission fee.
Formed in 1973, the Lake Shore Artists meet at the arts center the second Friday of each month to critique works, share information and have demonstrations in technique. Anyone interested in joining or obtaining more information should phone Jan Bidlack at (440) 466-3448.
Band at Cedar's Lounge
YOUNGSTOWN -- Cedar's Lounge, 23 N. Hazel St., will welcome Okkervil River on Wednesday. The national touring band, based in Austin, Texas, has just released its sixth album, "Black Sheep Boy," and, according to Rolling Stone magazine, is ready to break big very soon. Rolling Stone describes their sound as "haunted country" and the New York Times adds that the songs contain "clever, heart-breaking lyrics." The show starts at 10 p.m. Admission is $7. Only those 18 and older will be admitted.
