Children's mental health service gets grants

YOUNGSTOWN -- D & amp;E Counseling Center, a local child and adolescent mental health service organization, has been awarded a two-year grant from the Ohio Children's Trust Fund in support of the center's Upstream program.
This is the third year the center, located at 711 Belmont Ave., has received Trust Fund support.
Upstream provides training to parents, teachers and/or aides of children with behavioral and/or emotional problems, ages 3-5, who attend Mahoning County preschools/day cares.
Upstream is based on the Incredible Years program, a nationally recognized curriculum adopted by the Ohio Department of Mental Health. About 45 preschool and day-care teachers and assistants will participate in the program, while parental enrollment is expected to grow to more than 60 through the course of the year.
The Upstream program is designed to lower the risk for child abuse by assisting parents to develop more realistic expectations of their children, to develop more adequate coping skills related to perceived crises and to develop emotionally supportive connections, according to a D & amp;E Counseling Center press release.
