Chaney rallies to beat Eagles
Lakeview, Girard, Wilson, Salem and West Branch also advanced.
HUBBARD -- Kevin Barran drove in one run with a sacrifice fly and then scored the go-ahead run in the sixth inning as Chaney edged past Hubbard 3-1 Wednesday in a Division II sectional baseball tournament game.
With the score tied 1-1 in the sixth inning, Barran led off with a single and came around to score on Sam Shaffo's single. Lou Kopachy scored the other run in the sixth.
Tom Enyeart pitched the win allowing six hits while losing pitcher Kevin Hogue allowed four hits.
Dave Baco and Cody Bailey each had a double for the Cowboys while Baco, the shortstop and rightfielder Eric Franklin each made outstanding defensive plays.
Frank Rosile and A.J. Pulice each had two hits for Hubbard (10-4).
Chaney (3-14) will play at Niles next Wednesday in a sectional finale.
Lakeview 10, Struthers 7
CORTLAND -- Mark Novotny's first-inning grand slam helped give the Bulldogs (9-10) a 6-0 lead. Novotny finished with four hits and six RBIs.
Matt Pitlik had two doubles while Sean McBride had two hits. Ed Mackiewicz and Mike Frangiamore had two hits and two RBIs apiece.
Winning pitcher Josh Lawerance (3-1) relieved Dave Dejacimo in the third inning.
Lakeview advances to play a sectional finale next Wednesday at Howland.
For Struthers, Mike Barone had three hits while Adam Wilaj had two hits and three RBIs. Rob Mistovich also had two hits.
Girard 9, Liberty 6
GIRARD -- Mark Feist's three hits included a double for the Indians (8-10). He drove in four runs.
Rob Ginocchi and Ryan Tolone had two hits apiece while Eric Stevens was the winning pitcher.
The Indians advance to a sectional final game at Poland next Wednesday.
For Liberty, Phil Bessoiu and Kyle Hoff doubled.
Salem 11, Akron Springfield 1
SALEM -- The Quakers (12-8) sent 11 batters to the plate in the first inning to take a 7-0 lead and Springfield couldn't recover.
Ryan McCallister (4-1) of Salem worked a complete five-inning game allowed only five hits and seven strikeouts.
Grant Sevek went 2-for-3, scored twice and drove in three runs for the Quakers. Mark Kolich added two hits and scored once.
Mark Barnes led Springfield (3-15) with two hits and he scored the only run.
Salem will play Alliance next Wednesday in a sectional final. The two schools split during the regular season.
Wilson 13, Rayen 0
YOUNGSTOWN -- Tom Mulligan pitched a five-inning one-hitter and struck out seven as Wilson rolled past Rayen.
Kevin Newberry drove in four runs for the Redmen (2-13) while Louis Charriez had a pair of doubles. Bryant Dailey and Thomas Martin each scored three times in the win.
West Branch 6, Canton Timken 4
BELOIT -- Andy Todor and Marc Possage each hit a two-run single to pace in helping the Warriors' (11-7) come-from-behind victory over the Trojans (11-7).
Tad Gasper (3-3) came on in relief for the Warriors in the third inning, allowed only one hit and struck out six to pick up the win.
Canton GlenOak 11, Southeast 1
RAVENNA -- GlenOak, only managed to get four hits, but took advantage of eight Southeast errors to prevail.
Brad Finch hit a double and single and Don Clegg a pair of singles for the Pirates (1-17).
Mike Stonik hit a double and single for GlenOak (7-10).
