Champion gains 20th victory, 4-3
The Flashes beat LaBrae to remain unbeaten in TAC action.
CHAMPION -- The Champion High softball team needed two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning for a 4-3 victory over LaBrae to secure their 20th victory and remain atop the Trumbull Athletic Conference standings.
For the Golden Flashes (20-1, 11-0), Kasey Karr, Emily Hayes and Brittany Skeels had two hits each.
Karr (11-0) was the winning pitcher, striking out six batters and walking none. One of her hits was a double.
Champion coach Cheryl Weaver now has three seasons with at least 20 victories.
For the Vikings (6-5, 5-4), Stefanie Higgins had two hits and struck out two batters. Kim Calderwood tripled and Lia Gordon doubled.
Ursuline 7, Niles 3
NILES -- Natalie Palermo and Jessica Yarab had three hits apiece for the Irish (13-7).
Winning pitcher Maureen Cearfoss (13-6) struck out eight batters and walked one. Her two hits included a double. Alessandra Parry doubled and Jolanta Carkido had two hits.
Red Dragons pitcher Chelsea Boyles struck out six batters and walked two. Sarah Fenstermaker and Ashley Lokash had two hits each. One of Lokash's was a double.
Mooney 3,Canton Central Catholic 2
YOUNGSTOWN -- Mimi Vitello's three hits included a double for the Cardinals (14-5). She also scored a run and drove one in.
DiAndra Dibacco had two hits and an RBI. Winning pitcher Colleen Courtney struck out 10 batters.
Canton Central Catholic is 15-4.
Struthers 13, Salem 5
STRUTHERS -- Amanda Ruozzo's three hits included two doubles and she scored three runs for the Wildcats (6-11, 2-8 Metro Athletic Conference).
Winning pitcher Michelle Zanni had three hits including a double and she drove in two runs. Annie Griscshow had two hits and three RBIs.
Michelle High and Shannon Webb had two-run doubles while Halle Minchin-Skook's two hits included a double.
For Salem, Steph Szabat and Brittany Gregory had two hits apiece.
Liberty 6, Brookfield 5
YOUNGSTOWN -- Everybody in the starting lineup had at least one hit for the Leopards (3-11), who rallied in the bottom of the eighth inning to scored the winning run.
Michelle Dykes hit a triple, double, two singles, scored twice and stole two bases for Liberty. Megan Kay hit a double, three single and scored once.
Courtney Christy hit a double and single and scored twice for Brookfield (3-13). Stephanie Geer added a double and single and drove in two runs.
Hubbard 6, Girard 2
GIRARD -- The Eagles put the game out of reach as Tressa Scahill hit a three-run home run. Hubbard also tallied three runs in the second inning.
Winning pitcher Gaby Flynn scattered five hits and struck out eight to pick up the win.
Girard (7-15) was paced by Morgan Tondo and Kim Turner, who hit two singles apiece.
Lakeview 5, Newton Falls 1
CORTLAND -- The Bulldogs (11-5, 6-5) scored all of its runs in the first two innings in the Trumbull Athletic Conference contest.
Chelsea Butler hit two singles, scored once and stole a base for the Bulldogs.
Newton Falls fell to 16-4 and 7-3.
