YOUNGSTOWN - Youngstown State defensive tackle Matt Porter of Yuba City, Calif., has been named to the 2004 Gateway Football Conference Honor Roll. The President's Council Academic Excellence Award requires a minimum 3.5 cumulative grade-point average (through the 2004 fall semester) and participation in athletics a minimum of two years. Also, the student-athlete must be within 18 hours of graduation. Fifty-three student-athletes received the league's Commissioner's Academic Excellence Award. That requires a minimum grade-point average of 3.2 for the previous two semesters, a minimum 3.2 grade-point average for the current term (Fall 2004), and participation on the football team. Freshmen are not eligible. Twelve Youngstown State football players were recipients of this award: Matt Brouse, Nick Forro, Ryan Jewell, Tom Krupko, Ryan Martino, Bob Perez, Porter, Jim Smith, Brent Steiner, Nick Terracina, Bryant Wilson and Tom Zetts. WOMEN'S GOLF
GALENA -- Youngstown State golfers Gina Abruzzino of Niles, Felicia Ciotola of Canfield and Brittany Jones placed in the top 10 at the Horizon League Women's Golf Championships Tuesday at the Royal American Links Golf Course. Abruzzino, a senior, placed fifth while Ciotola, a freshman, was seventh and Brittany Jones, a freshman, was 10th. Abruzzino carded an 82 on Tuesday to finish with a three-round score of 249. She had rounds of 84 and 83 on Monday. Ciotola carded an 87 on Tuesday to finish with a 253 for the tournament. On Monday, she had scores of 88 and 78 and was in fifth place following the first 36 holes. Jones had an 85 on Tuesday to score a 257 for the three rounds. She had scores of 85 and 87 the first two rounds. The Penguins finished second in the team race, finishing with a three-round total of 1,020. Butler ran away with the team crown posting a 972. The Bulldogs had four individual place in the top seven as Lynnsey Showers won the individual title by 16 strokes with a 226. Loyola was third with a 1,027, Cleveland State placed fourth with a 1,067 and Detroit had a 1,099 competing in its first HL Championships. Sophomore Bonnie Sherman placed 13th with a 257 after carding an 86 on Tuesday while freshman Mallory Wyderka was 18th with a 270 after firing an 85 on the final day. Abruzzino was named first-team all-conference for the third consecutive year. In the three years, the Penguins have finished first, second and third at the conference championship.
MEN'S GOLF
GALENA -- Junior Nate Komsa placed ninth and junior Josh Zarlenga tied for 10th at the Horizon League Men's Golf Championships, which concluded on Tuesday at Royal American Links Golf Course. Komsa finished with a three-round score of 225 while Zarlenga was one shot back with a 226. In the team race, Detroit won with an 891, placing six strokes in front of Wright State. UW-Green Bay was third, Cleveland State placed fourth, Butler was fifth while YSU finished sixth and Loyola was seventh. YSU finished with a three-round score of 935 to finish six strokes in front of the Ramblers. The Penguins had rounds of 315, 307 and 313 during the tournament. Komsa shot a 78 on the final day to go with rounds of 76 and 71 from Monday while Zarlenga had a 75 after rounds of 78 and 73 on Monday. Cleveland State's Doug Barber won the event by three strokes with a 216. Other Penguin finishers included Ross Beal who tied for 29th with a 238 (78-80-80), Ryan McGraw who was 34th with a 246 (83-83-80) and Jim Powers who was 35th with a 261 (89-87-85).
