TRUMBULL COUNTY City water deal nears reality
The communities also may look at ventures involving electric and sewer service.
NEWTON FALLS -- After a year of meetings, a joint venture that would bring city water to Braceville Township is closer to reality.
Newton Falls Council introduced a proposed contract Monday to provide water service to Braceville residents and businesses not served by a water district.
The 25-year contract calls for residents to be charged the current rate of water for Newton Falls residents plus an additional 30 percent.
"It's a pretty good contract. It helps get water out there when there isn't much else they can do," said City Manager David Watson.
The first official talks between the two communities began in July 2004. During the past few months, the two sides have discussed forming a Joint Economic Development District, which was set up by the state Legislature to allow communities to join together to expand development opportunities and tax revenues.
Other ventures
The two communities also are interested in pursuing more projects, including electric and sewer service.
Both parties are very optimistic about the current and future joint ventures, officials said.
"They have the land; we have the utilities. It's a good combination for both parties involved," said Councilman Steve Stevens.
A number of details on the water contract are still being negotiated, including the cost of construction and maintenance. Watson said he has been looking at other communities with similar agreements to see what fits the two parties the best.
The proposed contract must be approved by the Trumbull County commissioners, and if passed, both parties involved would begin work on the final details.
