INDIANAPOLIS -- Junior Justin Thomas was named Horizon League pitcher of the week.
Thomas allowed two hits and one unearned run in a nine-inning complete game in the Penguins' 5-1 win Wright State.
Thomas is 6-3 overall and 2-0 in the Horizon League. In 18 innings against league opponents, Thomas has not allowed an earned run, has allowed only six hits and has struck out 23. He also moved into second place in school history in career strikeouts with 229. He also leads the team in wins (6), innings pitched (611/3), strikeouts (67), starts (10) and pickoffs (5) and ERA (3.38).
Track and field
PHILADELPHIA -- Junior Emily Schnitkey qualified for the NCAA Mideast Regional and broke her own school record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Penn Relays.
Schnitkey ran a time of 10 minutes, 44.75 seconds to place 10th, surpassing her previous best by nearly a second and beating the qualifying time of 10:52.10.
Bethany Anderson placed fifth in the shot put (45 feet, 31/4 inches) while Yandeh Joh finished 14th in the long jump (17-3), and Katy Williams placed 14th (13-48) and Amy Hill was 18th (126-9) in the discus.
Nick Smith was 13th in the steeplechase with a personal-best time of 9:19.46 while Nick Buzek finished 35th in the Olympic Development 5,000 at 14:49.32.
Aaliyah Gillespie, Brittny Humphrey and Dave Mealy picked up individual victories at the Sparky Adams Invitational Saturday at Baldwin-Wallace.
Gillespie won the 100 hurdles (14.22), Humphrey won the 400 hurdles (1:06.66) and Mealy won the 5,000 in 15:08.86.
Jeanna Cunningham placed second in the 100 (12.14) and third in the 200 (25.01), Leslie Johnson was fifth in the 400 (58.48), Satara Freeman was second in the 100 hurdles (14.31), Schnitkey was second in the 1,500 (4:43.69), Marielle Glanz was fourth in the 800 (2:19.12) and Lindsay Wojciak was fifth in the steeplechase (12:00.93).
Nikki Hooper was fourth in the triple jump (35-1), Joh was fifth in the long jump (17-51/2), Hill was fourth in the hammer (148-4) and Williams was fifth in the discus (137-3).
Matt Paullin finished third in the 5,000 (15:34.19), Scott Streiner was eighth in the 200 (22.43), Joe Lahmon was fifth in the hammer (155-9) and Nick Rodland was ninth in the shot put (44-9).
Men's golf
GALENA, Ohio -- Defending medallist Nate Komsa is in the hunt for a second straight title after 36 holes of the Horizon League Championships at Royal American Links Golf Course.
Komsa had a 71 on his second round to move up to fifth place after having the 12th-best opening round with a 76 on Monday. Komsa's 147 puts him four strokes behind co-leaders Doug Barber of Cleveland State and Kyler Murphy of Detroit.
The Titans shot 288 in the second round to grab a one-stroke overall edge over Wright State (589-590). The Penguins are in sixth place with a two-round score of 622 (315-307), one shot ahead of Loyola.
Women's golf
GALENA, Ohio -- Freshman Felicia Ciotola (Canfield) moved into fifth place at the Horizon League Championships at the Royal American Links Golf Course with a two-round total of 166. Ciotola is one of three Penguins who are in the top eight after the first 36 holes of the 54-hole tournament.
As a team, YSU is second after scoring a 682, trailing Butler by 27 strokes. Ciotola had rounds of 88 and 78. Senior Gina Abruzzino (Niles) is sixth (84-83--167), freshman Brittany Jones is eighth (85-87--172), sophomore Bonnie Sherman is tied for 14th (85-92--177) freshman Mallory Wyderka is 21st (92-93--185).

DeSantis is PAC pitcher of week
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Angie DeSantis of Bethany was named Presidents' Athletic Conference softball pitcher of the week. DeSantis led Bethany (24-13, 7-1 PAC) to its only win last week, posting a 2-0 shutout over Geneva. The junior allowed four hits, striking out four.
