SOFTBALL Lakeview, Struthers advance



Springfield clinched the Inter-County League title with a win over Lowellville.
CORTLAND -- Lindsay Whetzel scattered four hits and struck out nine batters Monday as Lakeview defeated Niles McKinley 5-1 in a Division II softball tournament game.
Jen Baker and Kate Barnett each had two hits, while Lauren Whetzel and Chelsea Butler drove in two runs for the Bulldogs (10-5) who will meet Conneaut on May 9.
Ashley Lokash had two of the four hits for Niles, one a double.
Struthers 13, Rayen 2
YOUNGSTOWN -- Halle Minchin-Skook hit a three-run home run and sparked a seven-run fourth inning as Struthers rolled over Rayen in five innings at Pemberton Park.
Michelle Zanni picked up the win with relief help from Michelle High. They combined to allowed just four hits.
Zanni also had two hits as did Nicole McGuire. The Wildcats (5-10) will face Hubbard next on May 9 in Hubbard.
West Branch 10, Chaney 3
BELOIT -- Winning pitcher Vana Morgan (6-11) had four hits including a homer for the Warriors. Morgan drove in four runs.
Becky Rinyo had three hits while Allison Edie, Kaitlin Bell and Holly Mellinger had two apiece. Evelyn Woods doubled for West Branch which advanced to a sectional final next Monday against Poland.
Claymont 10, Beaver Local 0
CARROLLTON -- Emily Edgar pitched a one-hit shutout for Claymont. Janelle Jones was three-for-three with a three-run home run for the winners.
Danielle Butler had the lone hit for Beaver Local.
Regular season
NEW MIDDLETOWN -- Christy Warren hit a two-run homer, her fifth, as Springfield clinched the Inter-County League title with a 12-4 victory over Lowellville.
Warren also doubled while Samantha Cavalier had three hits and scored one run for the Tigers (15-4, 9-1). Danielle DeWitt, Heather Snyder and Courtney Sheely each had two hits.
Winning pitcher Colleen Platt struck out six batters and walked none in the four innings she pitched.
For Lowellville, Lindsay Wilson and Juli Peterson had two hits apiece.
McDonald 11, Mineral Ridge 2
McDONALD -- Courtney Vitullo had three hits including a home run while Erica Giancola also added three hits as the Blue Devils rolled over Mineral Ridge.
Lindsay Ervan had a pair of doubles for McDonald (8-8, 3-5 ICL) while Jess Ferraro had two hits including a triple and drove in three runs.
Melanie Sparks had two hits and Chelsey Frigley a triple for Mineral Ridge (9-9, 4-4).
Western Reserve 2,Jackson-Milton 0
BERLIN CENTER -- Katie Harmon doubled and had an RBI and Quinn McCammon added an RBI on a sacrifice squeeze for Western Reserve (13-6, 7-4 ICL).
Harmon pitched a one-hit shutout, striking out eight and walking two. Ellie Sanders had two hits.
Jackson-Milton is 6-10, 3-6.
Champion 16, Girard 4
GIRARD -- Jaclyn Carpenter (8-0) pitched a complete game three-hitter and added four hits and three RBIs for Champion in a Trumbull Athletic Conference game.
Cara Popadak had three hits and an RBI for the Flashes (19-1, 10-0), who have a two-game lead over Newton Falls in the league standings with games against LaBrae, Hubbard, Liberty and Brookfield remaining. Kasey Karr and Hillary Beach added two RBIs.
Erica Leskovec had a double for Girard (7-13, 3-7).
Newton Falls 7, Hubbard 1
HUBBARD -- Emily Montgomery, Lindsay Callend and Kristine Berry had two hits each for the Tigers (15-3, 9-2 TAC).
Winning pitcher Lindsay McCartney (15-3) struck out seven batters.
For the Eagles (7-9, 5-5), Callie Oyler had three hits and Tressa Scahill two. Scahill struck out four.
