Transfer period for pupils
YOUNGSTOWN -- Beginning today, pupils wanting to transfer into the Youngstown City School District can get transfer applications.
The school board adopted open enrollment from adjacent school districts. Pupils from Girard, Liberty, Hubbard, Canfield, Boardman, Poland, Struthers, Campbell, Lowellville and Austintown can apply for transfer to city schools for the 2005-06 school year.
Applications will be available in room 110 of the Irene Ward Building, 20 W. Wood St. The deadline to apply is May 31.

Driver arrested
YOUNGSTOWN -- Shane Lowther, 19, of Bouquet Avenue was arrested at 3:50 a.m. Sunday on charges of receiving stolen property and driving under suspension when stopped on Hillman Street for loud exhaust, speeding and no license plate light, police said.
The car, a 1995 Honda, had been reported stolen Saturday, police said. The car's radio was gone and the steering column damaged, reports show.
Home fixtures stolen
YOUNGSTOWN -- Eleven antique brass lighting fixtures and five leaded-glass windows were taken from a house for sale in the 200 block of Park Avenue, police said.
The theft was discovered Sunday by a real-estate agent. Police said entry was made through a side porch window.
Arts meeting open
YOUNGSTOWN -- The public is invited to the meeting of the Youngstown Arts & amp; Entertainment District Association at 6 p.m. May 11 in the second-floor auditorium of the Ohio One Building downtown.
Guest speakers will be William A. Conti, president of the Henry H. Stambaugh Auditorium Association; Bentley Lenhoff, executive director of The Youngstown Playhouse; and Patricia C. Syak, executive director of The Youngstown Symphony, who will discuss Powers Auditorium.
Wildflower walk planned
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- Celebrate spring with a wildflower walk at 2 p.m. May 8 at Jennings Environmental Education Center.
The Jennings staff will explore the unique history, uses and folklore of the season's first blooms. Each spring wildflower has its own history and personality.
Jennings is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays and on weekends as scheduled. The trails are open daily from sunrise to sunset for hiking and other environmentally related activities.

Several grants awarded
YOUNGSTOWN -- Easter Seals of Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties recently received grants to its Easter Seals Building Tomorrow's Assurance Fund for Children.
The grants were $9,000 from the Aimee and LuLu Seidel Foundation, $1,000 from Senator Maurice and Florence Lipscher Charitable Trust and $1,000 from the Walter and Caroline Watson Foundation.
The fund supports the agency's Easter Seals Building Blocks Preschool, which provides programs and therapy services for children with disabilities and special needs ages 2-6. The program operates in cooperation with Mahoning/Youngstown Community Action Partnership.
