"Don't Dress for Dinner," opens Friday on the Trumbull New Theatre stage for a three-weekend run. Deb Nuhfer directs the cast consisting of Terry Shears, Kathy Purdum, Brian Gillespie, Cindy Marchionda, Maria Wright and Geno Blair. The play follows Bernard as he plans a weekend with his mistress through all the hilarious mix-ups with his wife and his best friend. YSU dance group
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown State University Dance Ensemble in Concert will perform at 8 p.m. Thursday to Saturday at Ford Theatre, Bliss Hall. The event is sponsored by the Department of Communication and Theatre in the College of Fine and Performing Arts. All but two of the concert pieces are student-choreographed; the others are choreographed by a faculty adviser and a guest artist. They represent modern, lyrical, theatre jazz, tap and hip hop styles of dance. Rehearsals started last September. Tickets are $3 for senior citizens and YSU faculty, students and staff; $5 for the general public; and free for children 12 and younger.
Gospel choir to sponsor auction and concert
KENT -- Kent State Gospel Choir is sponsoring a public concert and silent auction from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday in University Auditorium to raise money for its August trip to Edinburgh, Scotland, to perform at the prestigious American Gospel Music Festival. The choir's spring concert will follow at 7:30 p.m.; tickets are not required. The gospel festival routinely attracts audiences numbering in the thousands, said Linda Walker, Gospel Choir director and professor of music. Auction items include a pearl necklace, kitchenware, small appliances and collectibles. Raffle tickets for an open, round-trip airline ticket on Continental Airlines to anywhere in the United States also will be available. Donations can also be made in the name of the Kent State Gospel Choir through the Kent State University Foundation or sent directly to Walker at Kent State University School of Music, P.O. SRU to host symphony
PITTSBURGH -- Andres Cardenes will conduct the Pittsburgh Symphony Chamber Orchestra at Slippery Rock University's Miller Auditorium at 8 p.m. Tuesday. Tickets are $10; call (724) 738-2091. Besides holding the position of Concertmaster for the PSO, he maintains an active schedule as a chamber musician and conductor in Pittsburgh and throughout the country. He will host a preconcert workshop Tuesday with SRU music students. Members of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra string section will join Cardenes for Max Bruch's "Octet for Strings."
Howard Hewett, Dramatics to perform
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Dramatics, with opening act Howard Hewett, will be at Powers Auditorium Saturday evening. The combination of two well-known R & amp;B acts will provide lovers of traditional rhythm and blues a lot to like.
Besides, Hewett's latest CD and DVD will be released Tuesday. The discs, entitled "Intimate: Greatest Hits Live," celebrate his shows and his smooth style.
