SCHEDULE | Dana New Music Festival
Youngstown State University's Dana New Music Festival XXI will run Tuesday through Friday; events will take place at various locations. Principal guest composer is Samuel Adler, chairman of composition at Juilliard School of Music in New York City. Guest artist is E. Randolph Kelly, principal violist with the Pittsburgh Symphony; and guest composer is Kathy Henkel of Los Angeles.
TUESDAY
1 p.m.: Concert 1, YSU, Bliss Hall, Room 3026, works by Adler, Henkel, Proto, Rollin.
8 p.m.: Concert 2, Stambaugh Auditorium, Fifth Avenue, YSU Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Stephen Gage, director; Dana Symphony Orchestra, William Slocum, director. Works by Rimsky-Korsakov/Leidzen, Adler, Ravel/ Odom, Haffine, Rollin, Haydn, Beethoven.
WEDNESDAY
9 a.m.: Lecture 1: "American Music and Its Importance," Samuel Adler, Bliss Hall, Room 3026.
12:15 p.m.: Concert 3, Butler Institute of American Art, Wick Avenue. Works by Samuel Adler, Kathy Henkle, and David Gillingham.
3 p.m.: Lecture 2, "The Genesis of the Viola Concerto," Bliss Hall, Room 3136. Samuel Adler, composer, and E. Randolph Kelly, principal viola, Pittsburgh Symphony. Kelly will assist in discussion since he premiered it with the Pittsburgh Symphony and recorded it in Europe.
8 p.m.: Concert 4, Bliss Recital Hall, guest artist E. Randolph Kelly, viola; faculty and student ensembles; and the Festival Chamber Orchestra, Robert Rollin, director. Works by Adler, Dello Joio, Berger, Clark and DeLuca.
THURSDAY
10 a.m.: Panel Session: "New Music, the University and the Local Community," Bliss Hall, Room 3139. Adler, Gage, Meyn, Perkins, Turk, and G. Rollin.
2 p.m.: Open composition seminar, Samuel Adler, Bliss Hall, Room 3150.
FRIDAY
