DANA NEW MUSIC FESTIVAL Performances to honor Adler
The festival's Tuesday program will honor retiring faculty tubist John Turk.
YOUNGSTOWN -- Dana New Music Festival XXI, opening Tuesday, will honor guest composer Samuel Adler, head of the composition department at New York City's Juilliard School of Music.
Born in Mannheim, Germany, Dr. Adler emmigrated to the U.S. in 1939. After studying at Boston University and Harvard, he has had a career spanning military service, composition in a wide variety of media, guest composing, conducting and lecturing, and writing.
He founded the Seventh Army Symphony Orchestra, has more than 400 published works to his credit, has taught at more than 300 colleges and universities worldwide, including the Eastman School of Music, where he was professor of composition, and authored several important music texts.
Adler's works will be featured at 8 p.m. Wednesday, when members of the Dana Wind Quintet plus graduate student Emily Voye, piccolo, and senior Kristen Mather, bass clarinet, will perform Adler's "Seven Epigrams," and two Dana faculty. Misook Yun and Corinne Morini, will sing some of Adler's songs.
The Dana Festival Chamber Orchestra, Robert Rollin director, will play the "Concertino No. 3," the "Easthampton Sketches" by American Norman Dello Joio, and "Elegy" by Jean Berger, who, like Adler, was born in Germany and moved to the U.S. during World War II.
A student saxophone quartet will present Adler's "Line Drawings" after Mark Tobey. Guest artist Randolph Kelly, principal violist of the Pittsburgh Symphony since 1976, will also be featured on the Wednesday evening concert playing Adler's Canto for solo viola.
Kelly will also appear with Adler at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Bliss Hall, Room 3136, in a discussion of Adler's "Viola Concerto," which Kelly premiered with the Pittsburgh Symphony and recorded.
Kelly has also had an active international career as a soloist and as a chamber musician with recordings on Albany, Naxos, and Music Masters labels.
The Dana Symphony Orchestra, William Slocum director, will perform at 8 p.m. Tuesday, at Stambaugh Auditorium on Fifth Avenue. Included on the program will be Dana faculty Robert Rollin's "Renaissance Suite." The YSU Symphonic Wind Ensemble will also play and present Adler's "Serenata Concertante," featuring members of the Dana Wind Quintet plus graduate Shawn Teichmer, alto saxophone.
This program will also honor retiring Dana faculty tubist John Turk, a long-time supporter of contemporary music. The Dana Tuba/Euphonium Ensemble, John Turk director, will be part of the program.
Other related events are a recital Tuesday, 1 p.m. at Bliss Hall; a noon-hour recital at the Butler Institute of American Art, Wednesday, 12:15 p.m.; and an 11 a.m. concert in Bliss Recital Hall Friday, at the closing of the festival.
