Campbell nips Harding behind McQueen's arm



Ursuline defeated East Palestine while Liberty swept Chaney.
WARREN -- Lonnie McQueen threw a four-hit shutout, striking out 14 and walking three, to lead the Campbell High baseball team to a 1-0 victory on Wednesday over Warren Harding.
Stan Gozur hit an RBI single in the fourth to score James Bigley for Campbell (1-0).
Tom Popadak struck out five and walked two for the Raiders (0-1).
Ursuline 8, East Palestine 3
STRUTHERS -- David Patrick allowed just two hits and struck out 11 as Ursuline won for the second straight time against East Palestine (0-2).
Andy Safco had two hits and an RBI while Justin Markota added a double and an RBI for the Irish.
Liberty 4-8, Chaney 0-7
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Leopards opened the season with a doubleheader sweep of the Cowboys at Rocky Ridge.
Sam Barker pitched a complete-game, three-hit shutout in the opener, striking out seven.
Jon Krause had two hits for the Leopards.
In the second game, the Leopards had to overcome a 2-0 deficit as Randy Burgett picked up the victory.
Jeremy Hume had three hits and Jordan Dennis had two, including a double.
Rick Hlinka had two hits and Vic Morales a double for the Cowboys (0-2).
Girard 11, Badger 2
KINSMAN -- The Indians (1-0), behind 1-0, scored three runs in the second inning and built a 10-2 lead after six.
Ryan Collins hit a triple, double and single and drove in a run and stole two bases for Girard.
Winning pitcher Michael Cramer (1-0) hit a double and two singles. He also drove in three runs, scored twice and stole a base.
Norm Yannucci hit a pair of singles, drove in a run and scored once for the Braves (0-1).
Niles 13, Mineral Ridge 1
NILES -- Kyle Pitts allowed just two hits over five innings and the Red Dragons pounded out 13 hits against the Rams.
Mike Kelly led the way with two hits, both doubles and three RBIs, while Mike Ruscitti, Sean Cleary, Robbie Poeter and Brandon Miller doubled for the Dragons.
It was the season opener for both squads.
Springfield 7, Leetonia 2
NEW MIDDLETOWN -- With the score tied 2-2, Springfield (2-0) rallied for five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. That frame featured a single by Mike Sobnosky, back-to-back doubles by Chris Marin and Joe D'Amato, and a single by Julian Caraballo.
Sobnosky finished with two singles, drove in two runs and scored once. D'Amato doubled, singled, drove in a run and scored once.
West Branch 15, Akron Springfield 1
AKRON -- The Warriors (2-0) had six extra base hits in their 18-hit attack. They scored all of their runs over the first four innings, including nine in the second.
Jeromy King and winning pitcher Josh Winans each had three hits. Jim King pounded out two doubles while J.R. Gibson, Marc Possage and Steve McNeely added two hits apiece.
Ben Shackelford collected two singles for Akron.
