BOARDMAN TOWNSHIP 3 officers, firefighter sworn in at meeting

The police department is back to 63 sworn officers.

BOARDMAN -- Township police have three new officers among their ranks while the number of volunteer firefighters increases to 10.
William D. Leicht, township clerk, swore in the three new officers and volunteer firefighter at a trustees meeting Monday.
"These are not additional officers," said police Capt. Jerry Patterson. "They are replacing three officers, two who quit and one who retired."
The three new police keeps the department at 63 sworn officers.
The new officers are:
* Michael C. Dada, 25, of New Castle, a Warren officer since October,
* Michael J. Faith, 30, of Struthers, a Struthers detective and part-time officer with Mill Creek MetroParks police,
* Michael J. Sweeney, 29, of Boardman, a Poland village officer since March 2000 where he also filled in as acting chief.
Probationary period
The police officers are considered cadets and will earn $40,705 the first year. They must complete a 12-month probationary period and are required to move to the township within 15 months.
Upon successful completion of probation, the officers will earn $44,400 annually, plus overtime and benefits.
Nicholas Schuck of Boardman was sworn in as a part-time firefighter, who will be called out as needed. Such part-time firefighters, who supplement the full-time personnel, earn $11 per hour when called to a scene. Chief James Dorman said Schuck previously worked in California with the Forest Fire Reserve.
