Winner to paint 5-foot penguin

YOUNGSTOWN -- One of the 5-foot-tall fiberglass penguins not included in the Penguin Parade is sitting unpainted in Youngstown State University's Kilcawley Center.
Kilcawley officials are holding a contest with the winning student artist or artists getting the opportunity to paint the penguin, and receive $1,000.
The contest is open to all students enrolled at YSU in the spring semester.
Students must submit a design and complete an application to paint the penguin by April 15. The winner will be notified the week of May 2.
The finished penguin will be displayed at Kilcawley, YSU's student center, beginning in August, the start of the fall semester.
Applications and further details are available at www.kc.ysu.edu or by calling Lynn Haug, Kilcawley's retail operations manager, at (330) 941-3574.
Penguin Parade was a public arts project last year. Thirty penguin sculptures were decorated by local artists and then placed at public locations in Mahoning and Trumbull counties.
The penguins were sold in October to the highest bidders for nearly $200,000 at an auction. Proceeds benefited YSU's SMARTS program, the YSU McDonough Museum of Arts, and organizations supported by the Community Foundation's endowments.
