COLUMBIANA -- One lane of state Route 11 northbound in Columbiana County will be closed beginning Monday for pavement repair. The Ohio Department of Transportation announced that the work area will extend from just north of state Route 164 to Mahoning County. Traffic will be restricted to the passing lane. Southbound lanes will be open, too.
Man's signs ignored
YOUNGSTOWN -- Kids leaving Sheridan Elementary School who cut through a man's property in the 3400 block of Hudson Avenue have been ignoring his signs. Patrolman Frank Rutherford counted 17 orange and black NO TRESPASSING and KEEP OUT signs all over the house and garage for pedestrians to see. The man told the officer that he wants the school's security to pay close attention to kids during dismissal. He also wants the principal to tell teachers assigned to the crosswalk the problem of pupils trespassing on his property. He said he can't afford a fence.
Minorities discussion
YOUNGSTOWN -- A town hall meeting on the state of the black and Hispanic community in the Youngstown area will be at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the McGuffey Centre, 1649 Jacobs Road. Topics to be discussed are economic justice, education, and political, law, crime, health and justice issues. The event is sponsored by the Community Mobilization Committee including the following groups: Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance, Baptist Pastors Council, Youngstown NAACP, Associated Neighborhood Centers, Youngstown Area Urban League, People for Action, Junior Civic League and the A. Vehicle owners warned
COLUMBIANA -- Police are warning city residents that they may face a hearing and fine in the Mayor's Court if they have inoperable or unregistered vehicles on their properties. Officer Tab Bailey said he would be notifying residents with junk or unregistered cars, trucks or trailers in their yards that they may face fines if they fail to remove or garage the vehicles. Bailey enforces a city ordinance prohibiting parking or storing of such vehicles outside on public or private property. "The ordinance is enforced year-round. But, now that spring has arrived, I will be looking hard for violators," the officer warned. "Those that are in violation will be sent a letter giving them 10 days to correct any problems. If they do not remove the vehicle or trailer within 10 days, they will receive a summons to appear in the Mayor's Court where they will face a $100 fine."
Rape of girl reported
WARREN -- City police are investigating the reported rape of a 22-month-old girl. The child's 21-year-old mother, of 2nd Street Southwest, told police the rape occurred at a Webb Street Southwest address, and that she knows the rapist. Police were awaiting the results of various tests and had not charged anyone. The girl was treated at Northside Medical Center.
Water shutoff notice
CHAMPION -- The Trumbull County Sanitary Engineer's office will have water shut off on Mahoning Avenue (state Route 45) between State Road and Marshall Avenue from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday. Waterline relocations are being done there in conjunction with the widening of the road. For more information, call (330) 675-2775.
Indiana man arrested
AUSTINTOWN -- Police arrested an Indiana man on traffic charges and found he was wanted on felony drug charges in that state. Police pulled over Rodney Winebrenner, 38, Thursday morning at Mahoning Avenue and South Raccoon Road. Winebrenner initially gave police a different name. Police contacted a brother of the man Winebrenner originally claimed to be. That man said that his brother had worked for Winebrenner. Winebrenner then admitted his identity and police found a warrant for cocaine trafficking for him from Lafayette, Ind. He was charged and convicted in Mahoning County Court of driving with a suspended license, running a red light and giving false information to police. The judge sentenced him to 30 days, and Indiana authorities were notified.
