Activities:
1. Draw a large picture of a tulip. On each petal of the tulip, write a word that tells you something about Holland.
2. Make a shopping list of items you should take with you if you went on a family trip to Holland. Now find each item in the newspaper. Write down the price of each item. How much would you spend getting ready for your trip?
3. Find items in the newspaper that you could use to make a barrier to hold back a part of the ocean. Paste the items on a piece of paper. Write a sentence for each item, explaining how you would use it.
4. Why are each of these items important to the people of Holland: (a) bicycles, (b) dikes, (c) tulips, (d) cows and (e) windmills?
5. Use resource books and the Internet to learn more about what happened to the people of Holland during World War II. Use these questions to guide your research: What type of government did Holland have at the beginning of the war? How many people lived in Holland? What different ethnic or religious groups lived in Holland? How did the Nazis gain control of Holland? How did the Dutch suffer under the Nazis? What happened to Holland after it was liberated?
