Man with air pistol shot near high school

No students were involved in the shooting.
INDIANA, Pa. (AP) -- Police officers shot and killed a man who pointed a gun -- later determined to be an air pistol -- at an officer outside a high school, state police said.
An Indiana Borough patrolman shot the man, described as being in his 50s, shortly after 2 p.m. Wednesday outside Indiana Area High School, said state police Maj. Frank Monaco. The man died at a hospital a short time later.
The man appeared indigent and had asked for a job application at a school office shortly before he was shot, according to school officials, who said secretaries directed him to another building.
Police responded after receiving a 911 call about a man walking with a gun, but the man didn't show the air pistol in the school, school officials said.
'Failed to comply'
"The individual failed to comply with the officer's commands to drop the weapon and shots were fired," Cmdr. Brad Shields said.
The patrolman fired twice with a 12-gauge shotgun, striking the man in the chest and neck, Shields said. The man, whose identity was not immediately released, also had a knife.
Students were never in danger and no students or employees were involved in the shooting, said James Antis, assistant superintendent of the Indiana Area School District, about 45 miles northeast of Pittsburgh.
Indiana Police Chief William Sutton said the shooting appeared justified, but that it remained under investigation by state police.
