WARREN -- A hearing to pull the liquor license at a township bar is scheduled for next month.
Police Chief Tom Rush and Lt. Donald Bishop say the hearing concerning the license at the Golden Stallion, Main Street, can't come soon enough. The two have been trying to yank the license for close to a year.
"We had two previous hearings and the owner of the bar had both of those hearings continued," said Rush. "We're keeping our fingers crossed that this one goes through."
Officials at the bar did not return calls seeking comment.
"In the past year we have had trouble there all the time," Bishop said, noting that last April, after a week of violence at the bar, a 29-year-old man was shot to death.
And, on Thursday an elderly Hubbard man was run over in the parking lot by a van.
"They aren't open at night anymore but there is still stuff happening, the hit and run took place in the middle of the afternoon, in broad daylight," Rush said.
He noted that last spring police were at the bar at least one time a night.
Larger crowd
Employees at the establishment had said that since the 77 Soul club was shut down in Warren, the Golden Stallion has received a larger crowd.
Rush noted that because of the large crowds last year he had to ask for help from neighboring police departments, Warren city and Lordstown.
"I don't want to have to do that anymore," Rush said. "The problem was getting worse, not better."
The bar was closed for three days in February 2003 by the Trumbull County Health Department. The bar was shut down after inspectors found mold on the walls in a cooler, moldy vegetables and food stored at the wrong temperature, along with other violations.
