Westminster football coach resigns
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Westminster College football coach Jerry Schmitt has resigned to become coach at Duquesne.
He replaces Greg Gattuso, who joined the football staff at the University of Pittsburgh.
Schmitt served as an assistant at Duquesne from 1985-87 and 1992-99, was coach at Westminster for five seasons. He led the Titans to a 28-21 record and guided the program's transition from NCAA Division II to Div. III.
Westminster was 8-2 overall in 2000, then after a rebuilding season in 2001, the Titans finished 6-4 overall and 4-1 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference in 2002. Last season, Westminster was 5-5.
Schmitt was also coach at South Fayette High from 1990-91 and an assistant coach at several schools for six years.
He is a 1983 graduate of Westminster, where he was a three-year letterman and two-year starter on the offensive line.
Nero selected forNorth-South game
LOWELLVILLE -- Amanda Nero of Lowellville High was selected to play in the North-South Basketball Classic April 10 at Capital University.
A 5-foot-8 senior, Nero is the all-time career scorer in school history with 1,936 points. She averaged 23.5 points per game for the 2004-05 season.
Nero connected on 90 3-point goals and finished with 216 in her career 216. She averaged 20 points per game for her career.
She was Division IV first-team All-Ohio, first team All-NEO three straight years, 2005 All-NEO player of the year, All-Inter-County League first team selection four years in a row and ICL player of the year as a junior and senior.

*BOARDMAN -- Sophie Kew scored twice as the Blue Jackets tied the Flyers, 2-2, in the Lil' Phantoms ice hockey Classic at the Ice Zone.
Oliver Kew, Jack Kew, Stevie Lipinski and Mark Passarello had assists.
Flyers goals were scored by Michael Sajnovsky and Steven Ferko, with John Schiraldi and Nicky Ballone earning assists.
In another game, the Penguins and Sabres skated to a scoreless tie. Sabres goalie Tyler Emery stopped 32 shots while Penguins goalie Michale Helco stopped 24.
*Thunder Volleyball Club's 14-year-old team coached by Dan Fellows won a recent Junior Olympic Tournament at Poland Middle School. Players were Michelle Basista, Amanda Biblis, Jessie Dillon, Chelsea Guerrier, Megan Ramsey, Taylor Toothman and Liza Wood.
*The Thunder 12-year-old team coached by Tiffany Obradovich won a JO tournament. Players were Jenna Corroto, Kacie Roche, Steffany Armstrong, Taralynn Gilkinson, Julianna Boerio, Stephanie Sfara, Mackenzie Pinkerton and Jonna Omerzo.
*The Thunder 16-year-old team coached by Jenn Howser and Cori Harte won a JO tournament. Players were Belinda Hernon, Adrienne Porter, Sophie Paddock, Danielle Williams, Leila Nasser, Karla Farina, Brittany Hall and Brandi Lance.
The Thunder 16 team also won a tournament at Slippery Rock University.
*The Thunder 18-year-old team coached by T.J. Shouse won a JO event. Players were Stephanie Jarvis, Meredith Miles, Ashley Hannay, Ali Sfara, Jessica Evans, Dena New, Rachel Ducay, Kylene Hoch and Caitlin O'Patchen.
*The 16 year old Tri-County Green Poison team came in first place in the gold division bracket. Members of Tri-County were Nathalie DeChellis, Katlyn Flick, Meagan Gibson, Danielle Bletso, Jessie Szakacs, Amy Scullion, Taylor Summerfield and Ashley Palmer. They are coached by Curt Conser.
*The Trumbull Volleyball Club won two recent JO tournaments.
The Trumbull Blue 17s won the Lakeview Invitational defeating Club Jam in the Finals and the Trumbull Silver 15 's won the Streetsboro Invitational defeating Portage VBC in the Finals.
Members of the Trumbull Blue 17s team were Maggie Bogdan, Kim Budd, Corrie Gasser, Maddie D'Orio, Jennifer Gahagan, Markie Negrea, Courtney Christy and Andrea Gladis. The coach was Jason Jones.
Members of the Trumbull Silver 15s were Christina Starr, Suzi Starheim, Julie Grzelak, Amber Ackerman, Megan Kay, Kara Egelsky, Amber Walters, Heather Campbell and Sarah Lewis. The coaches were Josh Hall and Janene Bremick.
*The Valley Extreme 12U softball team won NSA qualifying tournaments in Vienna and New Castle, Pa.
The team is based in Canfield and includes players from Poland, Canfield, Ledgemont, Lordstown, Austintown and Windham. The NSA tournament will be held in Charlotte, N.C..

WARREN -- The Packard Electric Ladies golf league's get acquainted meeting will be held at the Four Season's clubhouse April 18 at 6 p.m.
Rulebooks that include schedules of events and dates for the season will be available. Members don't have to be Delphi employees to join.
