ON CAMPUS Freshman of Year Greco stands out at Toledo



Sophomore letterman John Greco, a 6-5, 315-pound left tackle from Boardman High, started football practice Saturday with the Toldeo Rockets, the 2004 Mid-American Conference champions.
Greco started all 13 games at right tackle for the Rockets, who had the 11th-best offense in the nation last year with 459.2 yards per game.
Earning freshman of the year laurels, Greco helped the Rockets to a 9-3 record, 7-1 in the MAC and a berth in the Motor City Bowl in Detroit.
Toledo defeated Miami 35-27 for the MAC title, then lost to Connecticut 39-10 in its bowl outing.
Sophomore letterman Brandon Alexander (6-1, 190), a Howland High graduate, is expected to see playing time for the Rockets at free safety this fall.
He had five solo tackles and assisted on seven others last season.
Other notes
Denison University: Jessica West of Youngstown, a sophomore sprinter at Calver Academy, Ind., placed fifth in the 50-meter dash, eighth in the 200 and was a member of the second place 4x200 relay at the Denison Women's Indoor Track and Field Meet.
Ohio Wesleyan: Junior righthander Michael Krieger (2-0), a Boardman High graduate, has gotten off to a fast start for the Battling Bishop.
He worked five innings to pick up the win in the first game of a doubleheader as Ohio Wesleyan topped Albion 18-6 in the season home opener. The Battling Bishop (8-0) won the second game 7-5.
Krieger then pitched seven shutout innings, facing only two batters over the minimum. He struck out 11 and allowed only two hits as the Bishop upended McMurray 18-2.
In 12 innings, he's allowed 11 hits, struck out 15 and walked only two and has a 2.25 ERA.
Westminster: Ryan Mistovich (Boardman) defeated Mark Coney, 6-3, 6-4 to help the Titans' tennis team (4-1) defeated Thiel College 6-3 for their third straight win.
Gannon: Joanna Fergus (Fitch) and Jaclyn Corroto (Boardman) have helped the Gannon University women's softball team get off to a fast start with nine straight victories.
Playing in the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic at the Lee County Sports Complex in Fort Myers, Fla, Fergus, a three-year starter at first base, leads the team in batting with a .500 average, with 25 hits, including five home runs, five doubles, 21 RBIs and a .780 slugging percentage.
Corroto, a shortstop for the Erie squad, has 17 hits in 49 at bats for a .347 average. She has four doubles and eight runs batted in.
The Knights are hitting .329, with 145 hits in 453 trips to the plate.
Gannon will travel to Battlecreek, Mich., for the GLIAC/ClVC Challege on Friday.
