Weathersfield finances in good shape

MINERAL RIDGE -- The Weathersfield school district should be OK financially through the end of 2005 but the district will remain under state fiscal watch.
Treasurer Angela Lewis reported that with voter approval May 3 of a 4.2-mill, five-year renewal levy, the district should have adequate operating revenue through 2009. The levy would generate $418,128 annually, and is included in the district plan given the state to show how the district will stay solvent.
Board member and finance committee member Fred McCandless told colleagues Wednesday that the buildings committee gave Superintendent Michael Hanshaw a list of preventative maintenance suggestions, primarily concerning driveways and boilers at all three schools.
Driveway repairs will begin as soon as the weather breaks, Hanshaw said. The board approved a $15,000 contract with Pantalone Paving Inc. of Niles for asphalt, patching, sealing and striping of the high school, middle school and elementary school lots.
The board also approved replacing a 29-year-old mixer at the high school cafeteria at a cost of $3,942 from the W.C. Zabel Co., Youngstown.
