BOARDMAN -- In celebration of Dr. Seuss' birthday, The Cat in the Hat will make an appearance at noon Saturday at the Barnes & amp; Noble Bookstore, 381 Boardman-Poland Road, during a Read Across America "Seuss-abration." Woman charged inunderage tobacco sales
YOUNGSTOWN -- Ashley Mikolaj, 18, of Idlewood Avenue, Austintown, was issued a citation Tuesday at USA Gas Mart, 667 S. Meridian Road, that charges her with selling tobacco products to an underage person. Police, based on complaints about underage sales, sent in a 14-year-old cooperating witness with buy money. The teenager bought a pack of cigars for $2.50 and then identified Mikolaj to police as the seller, reports show.
Meeting to focuson veterans' benefits
YOUNGSTOWN -- Alterra Sterling House of Youngstown will host an informational meeting at 6:30 p.m. March 23 regarding Veterans Affairs benefits for assisted living residents. YSU forum to lookat treatment of women
YOUNGSTOWN -- A political forum to discuss the Bush administration's treatment of women is scheduled for 3 p.m. Monday at Kilcawley Center's Ohio Room at Youngstown State University. The forum, part of Women's History Month on campus, is sponsored by the Student National Organization of Women. Forum participants include Eric See, a YSU assistant professor of criminal justice; Tracey S. Winbush, the Mahoning County Republican Party's headquarters coordinator during the 2004 campaign; Gabriel Palmer-Fernandez, YSU professor of philosophy and religious studies; Debbie Kline, field coordinator of Planned Parenthood of Mahoning Valley; and Brent Steiner, a YSU senior studying philosophy and religious studies.
Shotgun casings foundin front of residence
WARREN -- City police said they recovered two shotgun casings from the street in front of 1053 Kenilworth S.E. early Thursday. A 28-year-old man told police someone had fired into the residence twice at about 4 a.m., then fled in a white vehicle. No injury was reported.
Man shot in backwhile at a party
WARREN -- A friend took a 25-year-old West Side man to Forum Health Trumbull Memorial Hospital for treatment after he was shot in the back at a party, police reported. Marlin L. Jones, 25, of 1752 Arthur Drive N.W., reported the felonious assault to police late Wednesday. He said a woman he doesn't know picked him up and drove him to a party on Deerfield Avenue Southwest. There, he was shot in the back by an unidentified man who had a large semiautomatic handgun, Jones told police.
Pot plants, cash seizedat Austintown home
AUSTINTOWN -- Officers from the Mahoning Valley Law Enforcement Task Force took several marijuana plants, seeds, a digital scale and cash from a home at 1210 Signature Drive. No charges have been filed after the search, which happened Tuesday evening. Officers took several mature marijuana plants, small starter plants and growing lights from a locked room off the pantry. Photographs taken at the scene show garbage bags full of the plants. Loose marijuana was found under the bed and in the closet of the master bedroom. Officers also took about $1,700 in cash from the house, which was occupied by a couple in their 40s and their two sons, who are in their 20s.
