With road work comes delays

A hearing will be set for resident who hasn't cleaned up his property.
HILLSVILLE, Pa. -- Widening of Garner Road is expected to cause delays and even detours for motorists from now until the end of the summer.
Mahoning Township Supervisor Poncho Exposito said at Tuesday's township supervisors' meeting that the portion to be widened starts at the entrance to the Zambelli property and ends about 2,000 feet north.
The project is designed to move the ditch back and make a berm to stop water from getting under the road.
In other matters, Code Enforcement officer Jim Morris reported a 60-day waiting period has expired and a hearing will be set soon over the failure of Ray Hrabos to clean up his property on Garner Road.
Township Solicitor Tom Leslie told supervisors that the six-year planning commission terms they instituted they could be staggered are illegal. He said the terms must all past four years under state law.
Fish fries
Exposito, who also is fire chief, announced that fish fries to benefit the fire department will take place for the next two Fridays from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Edinburg Fire Station.
Cost for all is $7 except $6.50 for senior citizens. The fire auxiliary is also planning a spaghetti dinner fund-raiser for April 24 at the community center.
Supervisor Gary Pezzuolo said start-up of the Edinburg water project will proceed as soon as $500,000 in Community Development Block Grants is received.
The township received notification from BFI that the company has hired a guard to sit at the facility entrance and ask truck drivers to exit by going north instead of south on State Line Road because of load limits.
One driver refused and was fired after they notified his employer, the letter states. The landfill had received complaints from residents about overweight trucks on the road. Exposito said that because only 100 feet of the road is in Mahoning Township, the township cannot enforce load limits.
Supervisors also received notice that when the county replaces the Hilltown Bridge over the Mahoning River, warning lights will be installed at the Norfolk Southern Railroad tracks there.
