AK-47, ammunition stolenSTRUTHERS -- Five juveniles ages 14 to 17 are charged in a home burglary in which an AK-47 rifle and ammunition were stolen, police said.
Four of the youths are from Struthers and the fifth is from Youngstown, Detective Michael Faith said Wednesday. All were arraigned on aggravated burglary charges and two face charges in an unrelated theft.
Authorities have yet to decide whether any will be tried as adults in the break-in Friday at 39 Morrison St.
According to the police report, the home's resident awoke from a nap about 9:45 p.m. and was starting up a stairway in the dark when he noticed cold air coming from the kitchen. He found a side door off the kitchen open, and after turning on a light, discovered the kitchen had been ransacked.
Signs of an intruder were found in other rooms, including the bedroom where the AK-47 had been in a closet. Responding police also found a vehicle at the home had been burglarized and items from it were strewn in the yard.
A neighbor told police of seeing a blond youth running up the victim's driveway an hour before police arrived.
A Poland K-9 team followed a scent trail that ended at a neighboring home and police removed several items to be checked for fingerprints.
After an investigation by detectives, the rifle was found at an Austintown residence, Faith said. Police on Saturday arrested two youths, leading to the arrest of two others later that day. Police arrested the fifth suspect Tuesday at a Youngstown school. struthers burglary
