Man and woman of the year announced at annual banquet



YOUNGSTOWN -- St. David's Society held its 114th St. David's Day banquet Feb. 26 at Western Reserve United Methodist Church.
Nelson Llewellyn was director for the gymanfa ganu (song fest), and Sally Sampson, the accompanist. Dr. John Tamplin read Welsh poetry.
Entertainment was provided by Jennifer Davis Jones, who sang Welsh hymns and folk songs, the last one as a duet with her husband, Dr. Allan Mosher. They were accompanied by Shirley O'Connor.
Marian Engelhardt presented the Welsh Woman of the Year award to Rhea Crump, and Dr. John Tamplin presented the Welsh Man of the Year award to Tom Kotsol.
The honorees
Kotsol is a native of Youngstown and a 1967 graduate of Campbell Memorial High School. He attended Youngstown State University and graduated from Youngstown College of Business and Professional Drafting with an associate degree in architectural drafting. He began his professional drafting career at General Extrusions, before starting his own drafting and design firm, Magic Pencil Drafting.
He has served as deacon, elder and Sunday school teacher at Pilgrim Collegiate Church.
In 1987 he began taking photos for St. David's Society at the national gymanfas, eventually helping his father film the proceedings at the St. David's Society banquets. This led to the formation of Just For You Photography.
He was instrumental in forming Choir Band, now known as the Celebration Band, which performs at Foundation of Faith Community Church and which performed at the 2002 St. David's Banquet.
Married to the late George Crump for 30 years, Mrs. Crump is the mother of two and grandmother of six. She attended Fitch High School and Bowling Green State University.
A charter member of Calon Lan Welsh Women's Club, she has served in various offices for many years. She has served as president of Lynn Kirk PTA and tutors at Taft Elementary School. A 62-year member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, she serves as assistant treasurer, moderator of the women's association and member of the choir. She is an inactive elder of the church and is a former national officer of the National Presbyterian Mariners.
