Salem woman wins car in pet program
SALEM -- Nikki Adamson of Salem won the 1998 Ford Escort ZX2 given away as part of the Salem Humane Society's participation in the "Drive Away Pet Overpopulation" program.
This program was in recognition of Spay Day USA, a national campaign to end the euthanasia of healthy animals by promoting the benefits of spaying and neutering.
About 300 dogs and cats in Columbiana County area were spayed or neutered during the program.
Individuals who spayed or neutered their pets between Dec. 1, 2004, and Feb. 22, 2005, or donated $25 to Salem Humane Society Inc. to be used for spay/neuter were eligible to enter to win a car donated by Gary Wasson, owner of Speedy's of Salladasburg, Pa.
Nikki, who paid $25 to enter, is a full-time student at Youngstown State University and works part time at Marc's in Salem. Nikki told humane society officials, "Winning this car came at a great time as my old Geo just got hit and is falling apart. My family really supports spay/neuter. I'm so excited and so blessed."
According to Brenda Austin, board member and volunteer for the Salem Humane Society: "If the cats and dogs that were spayed/neutered during this program had not been fixed they could have produced [more than 1,000] offspring ... over the next year. ... Spaying and neutering a pet is an easy solution to the pet overpopulation crisis."
