ATLANTA -- Nonnie Hawkins holds her grandson, Emmanuel Hawkins, at their home. Emmanuel, who marks his first birthday today, was given little chance to live while in the womb of his mother, Tara. The 19-year-old girl was pronounced dead March 18, 2004, after being in a coma for several months. Two days before she died, she gave birth to Emmanuel, who became known as a miracle baby. According to investigators, the Tara and Stephen Davis, 19, argued Nov. 27, 2003, and she suffered a severe neck injury and brain damage. According to a report in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the dispute revolved around $10 and an insult. Davis pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and was sentenced to three years in prison.
A rebuke for Harvard chief
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- In a symbolic but stunning rebuke, Harvard's Faculty of Arts and Sciences passed a motion Tuesday saying it lacked confidence in President Lawrence Summers -- the first such action in the nearly 400-year history of the university. The 218-185 vote supporting the motion -- which even supporters had expected to be defeated -- was a significant setback to Summers' efforts to rebuild his standing with Harvard's faculty in the wake of the uproar over his comments about women in science at an academic conference in January.
Firetruck and bus collideon Calif. highway; 1 dies
ONTARIO, Calif. -- A bus heading for a casino smashed into a firetruck on a highway here Tuesday morning, killing one person and injuring 57 others, including three firefighters, authorities said. The Upland Fire Department truck was moving toward the median to reach the scene an earlier accident when the bus, traveling from Los Angeles to a casino in Indio, collided with it. One person on the bus was killed.
Treasurer launches bidto unseat Schwarzenegger
SAN FRANCISCO -- California Treasurer Phil Angelides launched his campaign to unseat Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Tuesday, saying he believes the Republican incumbent is indifferent to the needs of the state's most vulnerable residents. Angelides, 51, a longtime fixture in California politics, has raised about $12.5 million for the effort. Angelides said he was confident he'll win the Democratic nomination for governor in 2006 and beat Schwarzenegger.
hPeterson case protest
REDWOOD CITY, Calif. -- Harvey Blight, above, passes out leaflets against the death penalty outside of the San Mateo County Courthouse. He was there Tuesday in advance of today's sentencing hearing for convicted double-murderer Scott Peterson. Peterson's lawyer, Scott Geragos, filed a motion in San Mateo County Superior Court seeking to have the guilty verdicts set aside and a new trial set for the 32-year-old Peterson. Peterson was sentenced to death for the murder of his wife, Laci, and their unborn son.
Holocaust museum opens
JERUSALEM -- Israel's president warned of renewed anti-Semitism and the U.N. secretary-general urged an unyielding fight against racism during Tuesday's opening ceremony of a $56 million Holocaust museum that focuses on the personal tragedies of the Nazi genocide. Leaders from some 40 nations attended the ceremony at the new Holocaust History Museum at Jerusalem's Yad Vashem memorial, which took 10 years to complete.
