YSU FOOTBALL Penguins promote Wright

The fifth-year quarterbacks coach is the new offensive coordinator.
YOUNGSTOWN -- Brian Wright has been promoted to the Youngstown State University football team's offensive coordinator, Coach Jon Heacock announced Friday.
Wright replaces John Klacik who was named the head coach at Division II Lock Haven earlier this week.
Wright has been with the YSU program the past four seasons, serving as quarterbacks coach.
He worked with the wide receivers in 2003 and had the title of recruiting coordinator added to his duties prior to the 2004 campaign.
Still recruiting coordinator
Heacock said Wright will remain as the Penguins' recruiting coordinator for the timebeing and a search will continue for an offensive line coach.
"Brian has been around this program and knows the high standards that everyone expects," Heacock said. "We are excited to have someone with his abilities and loyalty to direct our offense. We are happy to keep our offensive staff together and it will be a team effort from all of them."
Grad assistant in 1997
Wright, who was a graduate assistant at YSU during the 1997 National Championship season, returned to YSU in February 2001 soon after Heacock was promoted to the head-coaching post.
For the first two years, Wright worked under Klacik as quarterbacks coach before working with the wide receivers as well in 2003.
Before the 2004 campaign, Wright took over the recruiting-coordinator duties and concentrated solely on the quarterbacks.
"Ever since the day I came to Youngstown State, I have been trying to prepare myself for the offensive coordinator role," Wright said. "We teach ours quarterback that they should know what all 11 guys on offense are doing.
"I feel the offense revolves around what the quarterback can do. Calling plays around what they can do will be critical," Wright said. "We have a good offensive staff in place and together we are all looking forward to working with this group of talented players."
Worked with Zetts
Last season, Wright helped redshirt freshman quarterback Tom Zetts have an outstanding rookie year. Zetts completed 154-of-255 passes for 1,822 yards and 16 touchdowns.
Zetts' completion percentage of 60.4 percent ranks as the third best (and was best by a freshman) in a regular season in school history behind Demond Tidwell's 63.5 in 1997 and Mark Brungard's 60.5 in 1994.
Zetts' 255 attempts were the most in a regular season since Brungard's 311 in 1995 while his completions were the most since Brungard's 165 in 1995
Wright does bring coordinator experience to his new role with the Penguins. He spent two seasons as the offensive coordinator at NAIA Walsh College. In 2000, which was his second as the coordinator at Walsh, the team averaged 32.8 points and 378.1 yards per game while three players were named NAIA All-Americans.
Youngstown State is set to being spring drills on April 7.
