Texas: Sophomore Tyler O'Halloran, a Boardman High graduate, has qualified in the 100-yard breaststroke, 100 freestyle and 50 free for the NCAA swimming and diving championships at Minneapolis, Minn., starting March 23. He is seeded 20th nationally for the 100 breast, 35th in the 50 free and 51st in the 100 free. Also qualifying for the NCAA meet were the Longhorns' 200 free relay (1:18.50), which is ranked ninth, and the 200 medley, ranked sixth. O'Halloran has been a member of both relays during the season. His best effort this season was in the 100 breast (54.25 seconds), when he placed third in the Big 12 championships. The 200 medley relay finished first (1:26.61) and O'Halloran anchored the team with a split-time of 19.42. O'Halloran, an academic All-American, carries a 3.35 grade-point average and earned first team all-Big 12 honors and first-team All-America after the Longhorns' 200 freestyle relay placed eighth at the NCAA championships last year. A Communications major, he plans to enter law school. The Longhorns are ranked seventh in the nation by the College Coaches Swimming Association. Last summer O'Halloran finished 23rd in the 100-meter butterfly (55.04) at the Olympic Trials in Long Beach, Cal.
Westminster: A veteran baseball squad includes senior outfielder Kevin Gesacion, a Boardman native, who is one of 14 lettermen back as coach Carmen Nocera starts his second season. Gesacion batted .342 and led Westminster and the Presidents' Athletic Conference with 21 steals last year. Senior DH Brad Hochendoner, an Ursuline High graduate, hit .320 with eight doubles and 17 RBIs. Tony Cunningham, a sophomore from Ellwood City, led the Titans in innings pitched (50) and he had a 4.42 ERA. Westminister won 15 of its last 25 games to finish 18-22 overall and 6-9 in the PAC. Outfielder Stephen Franklin, a junior from Boardman, and catcher/first baseman Tom Fee of New Castle are back. The newcomers include catcher Colby Beeson, outfielder Brian Chrobak and second baseman Don Kirkwood from Neshannock's state title team. Pitchers Jake Camuso of McDonald, Jake Zatchok of Berlin Center, catcher D.J. Yokley of East Palestine and first baseman Joe O'Hara of Hubbard are also recruits.
Nemergut sisters: Kim Nemergut, a Coastal Carolina senior, placed third in the mile (5:03.40), finished eighth in the 800 (2:30.36) and was a member of the third-place 4x400 relay at the Big South Indoor track and field championship. The South Range graduate was also honored with a Big South All-Academic award. Her sister Julie, a junior at Edinboro, set a meet record as she won the mile (5:01.05) at the PSAC Indoor Championships in East Stroudsburg, Pa.
Wittenberg: Among the 10 returning letterwinners for the softball team is three-time All-North Coast Athletic Conference pitcher/utility player Norah Gilliam of Canfield, the only active player on last year's NCAC 20th anniversary all-decade team.
